CUP CANDIDATES IN ACTION
(Special to the "Star.')
Thirteen New Zealand Cup candidates paraded in the Hannon Memorial, an event which aroused widespread interest, and was no doubt mainly responsible for attracting a large attendance. The race produced a great finish, and it was won by a great horse in Countless. He began well, but dropped in behind three or four horses, and when the run home commenced had to lake the longest way home. For a moment it did not look as if he would catch Dusky Sound, bub, responding in gallant style, he finally won going away, if anything He will be a firm favourite for the Trotting Cup. Fremont was always about third,, but was shut in ,on the rails most of the way. Shadow Maid had to make her final run on the outer and
finished in great style for fourth. Loyal Key, Hardy Oak, and Joan Conquest (who finished fifth) dropped out in the final stages. Haughty and Ferry Post broke at the start.'
Believe Me "took charge after three furlongs in the Improvers' Handicap and led Teddy Gregg and Gelert into the straight"for the final circuit. Believe Me and Teddy Gregg drew right away from the field, the former winning easily. Loughros was a poor third, just beating Gejert. Worthy Addition, Great Thorn, and Suspense broke at the start. In the first division of the Trial Handicap, Safety First shot the fronl after two furlongs and stayed there to win easily.- Convincer staged a late run ro take second from Nounie .Gratia.!!, inside the final 100yds. Pericarrow. waVc'lose up fourth. Furlough swerved away from the rails at the start and carried the field with him. Sylvia Direct and Special Effort lost all chance, and one or two others were sliced back. Traverse and Cumnock began slowly ' in the second division. Premineiice, * Sea Fortune, Frances Logan, and Cumnock led with six furlongs to go. The field bunched turning for home, alid, Princess Maritza, who had been at the rear of the field, came .round the turn on the extreme outside, and then came on to win easily. Nola Wrack got through in the final furlong to withstand a strong run by Traverse. Gold Rosette was fourth. Thumbs Up led practically all the way in the Redcastle Handicap, winning comfortably. Cold Steel was always a possibility and made a strong but unavailing run in the last 100yds. Safety Pin wa sgoing well in second place running for the straight, but showed little fight at the business end and finished third. Canister was in a bad position until turning for home, and though she finished fourth, had too much leeway to make up to -trouble ths place-fillers. The winner paid over a score.
Belfast Jack, Jacose. Gold Bank, and Star Ace were the leaders for the greater , part of the journey. Jacose and Belfast Jack led into the straight from a closerunning field, but the former tired badly, and Gold Bank shot out inside the final furlong and won easily. Goldeu River stayed on belter than Belfast Jack, with Erinack a fair fourth. True Potts broke up just after the start of the Oamaru Three-year-old Handicap, and Imperial Lady took charge after a furlong from Rosie Grattan and Scottish Trea sure. Netherbv and Plunder Bar were slow away. There was little change in the running over the middle 6tages, and Imperial Ladv looked like winning once headed for home. Native Scott then put in a <tron<r run and. catching the leader 100yds from the post, went on to score an easv win. Rosie Grattan was a poor third, with Loyal Nurse fourth. Teddy Gregg was up in sccondsplace before three furlongs had been covered in the Waitaki Handicap, and lav in behind the leader, Kerwood Bingen, until five furJongs frqm home, when he strode awny to win. with great ease. Kerwood Biiigen withstood a strong challenge from 'Special Bond with little fp spare, and Helen Scott was fourth. Relieve Me broke more than once and set himself an impossible (ask on top of a penalty of 48yds. Crucible swerved awav and Belfast Jack broke at (he start of Hie Dash Handicap. Warfield .was soon in front and was never headed, but had to be driven right out to maintain a comfortable margin from • Golden River, who was badly placed unlil they turned, for home. Tnfcgritv was always handy; but did not show "his usual dash at the business end of the race. Tokalon, fourth, had every chance, and Coquette Was/well, up early. Warfield returned hi* (supporters a win dividend approaching a third of a century.
