AUSTRALIAN MEAT
REASONS FOR RATIONING
SYDNEY, Oct. 25. The failure of Britain to increase her meat imports would mean that the British ration would be cut to less than one shilling's worth of meat per person per week. This has been stated officially in Sydney. The present British ration is is 2d a week, representing less than lib of meat for each person. The Commonwealth Minister of Commerce. Mr W. J. Scully, declared today that Australia would send record shipments of meat to Britain next year. " Australia has always had plenty of meat, but we have not enough to-day for all the people we have to feed," he said. " The Government is therefore asking the Australian people to accept what will be a substantial meat ration scale, about 2J-lb a week, so that we can back the offensive with food."
The Minister also emphasised Australia's responsibilities for provisioning the American fighting forces in the Pacific.
