THREE BIG CARRIERS

TO BE BUILT BY AMERICA WASHINGTON, October 23

The United States navy will build three super-aircraft carriers of 45,000 tousi the largest in the world, said the Secretary of the Navy. Colonel Frank Knox, to-day. The construction of two will be begun immediately. These carriers are to cope with larger-sized planes. They will have greater protection than ever in armament and armour plating, and also in speed, and will have a capacity to handle larger and more planes than any ship ever launched.

Colonel Knox said he could not estimate the cost of the vessels, but the ' New York Times ' points out that the ships will be almost twice the size of the Essex class carriers, which cost 60,000.000 dollars. It adds that, assuming the war will last three to four years longer, the new carriers will be of inestimable value in oarr-""- the war to the" Japanese islands.
