PUBLIC TENDERS CALLED
ADDITIONS TO NURSES' HOME HEALTH DEPARTMENT DEFIED (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, April 15. " This thing is developing into a ramp, and it is time that some board took a stand. I move that the board call for tenders for additions to the Nurses' Home at Kew and see what the Health Department will do," said Mr T. Golden, chairman of the Southland Hospital Board, at a meeting of the board to-day. Mr Golden was referring to the system introduced by the Government under which plans for public buildings are submitted to certain builders for quotations without tenders Being called for publicly.. The matter was raised by a letter from an luvercai'gill builder, who said lie would like to nave the opportunity of tendering for additions to tlio Nurses' Home. He was not one of the builders to whom the plans would be submitted for a ((notation. Mr Golden said he understood that other boards had) found that under this system builders' quotations were in some cases thousands of pounds in excess of the estimates. They could test the matter by calling for public tenders. The chairman's motion was carried.
