[From Our Cohresi'osdest.l FIRE BRIGADES' COMPETITIONS. The annual competitions between South Otago fire brigades for the Watts Cup weto held at Lawrence on Saturday, when five brigades look part. The weauicr was cold and showery, bub despite this there was a fair attendance of tno public, and the standard of work was excellent. The cup is awarded to the brigade whoso A teams secure the most points, and this year was won by Mill oft brigade, with Tapanui one point behind. Balclutha Brigade won most of the events, and annexed most of the prize money, bub their A team did nub manage to come out in front. Tho coni* petitions were well organised, and reflected credit on the Lawrence Brigade. The officials were: —Judges—Superintendent Strong (Tapanui), Messrs D. Stewart (Lawrence),* L. McLean (Balclutha), M. Mackay (Gore); , starter, Mr G. Talboys (Lawrence); timekeepers—Messrs Glen (Milton), J. McNoe (Balclutha), McDonald (Tapanui), and Superintendent C. Hislop (Kaitangata). At night a very enjoyable smoko concert was belli, at which the prizes won were presented bv Mr Souter (Mayor), who extended congratulations to the winners and complimented the brigades on tho fine display made. The cup was held by Milton at last competitions, and they are to be congratu- ■ luted on winning the trophy again this- year in view of the fact that the brigade has been handicapped in practices through members being unable to attend together owing to working overtime at the woollen mills. FARMERS’ UNION. At last week’s meeting of the Milton branch of the Farmers’ Union a discussion took place on the prevailing coal shortage, and the following resolution was carried: — “ That it bo a recommendation to the Minister of Man Power that all appeals for exemption from military service be supported by the workers’ time-sheet.’’ Dissatisfaction was expressed at the time of starling' the stock sales at Milton, it being considered unnecessary to ask farmers to attend these at 11 a.in. during the “off” season. It was decided to approach the Stock Agents’ Association' with a view to having tho sales started’at 11 a.m. during February, March, April, and May, and at 1 p.m. for (he rest of the year. It was decided to the Dominion Executive congratulating it on tlie amalgamation of tho two union journals * Point Blank ’ and ‘ Progress,’ thus giving the union one \oicc. JOHN AMBULANCE. j Following are the results of the final examinations held in connection with the St. John Ambulance Association in South Otago:— Balclutha Division.—Hygiene; C. Beeby, Mesdames L. W. Guest, F. Gilligan, McElwee, W. Fletcher, Misses D. Grant, V. Wyndham, M. Landels, J. Hayward, R. Wither. Owaka Division.—First aid: Colin McNab, Mesdames M. IllingworthD. Hay, Rogers, R. Brown, Allan, Misses J. Harvey, A. Miller, M. Faulkner, Allan, Forsyth. Benhar Cadets.—Leslie Adamson, David Budge, Leslie Budge, Ronald Burrows, Trevor Lane, Ray Cain, Graham Park, Graeme Todd, Misses Mavis Joyce, Dulcie Lane, Edna Reid, Dawn Teraki. Dr W. L. Dodds and District Officer E. V. Hughes were the examiners. CLUTHA SHOW. The Seventy-fifth annual summer show, under the auspices of CJutha and Matau A. and P. Society, was held at Balclutha yesterday. Tho weather up till about 2 p.m. was blustery, with showers, but from then on was fine. The attendance was well up to that of last year, the gate takings, including grand stand, amounting to £l4O 11s 6d, compared with £143 19 6d last year. Entries totalled 794 compared with 768, the increases being in the horse and baking sections. Sheep, cattle, and pigs showed slight decreases, while entries in the competitions were also down on last year. The quality of the stock forward "was high. In light horses, competition ■ was particularly keen, while there were some very fine rings of draughts shown. The display of implements was also good, and generally speaking the show was a great success and compared more than favourably with previous shows. The president (Mr J. Crutchley) and secretary (Mr I). Wallace) had the assistance of a large and energetic committee.- The . grand parade of show stock was a feature of the afternoon. PERSONAL. Prior to leaving the employ of the Bruce County Council to be married, Miss Joyce Morris, assistant clerk, was the recipient of a useful gift from members of the staff. The clerk (Mr Walker) made the presentation, and his good wishes to the recipient were endorsed by the engineer (Mr J. H. Bateman), and foreman. At the meeting _of the Balclutha Borough Council this week, Cr J. P. Lvall was appointed to represent the council at the Municipal Conference in Nelson iu March, and the town clerk (Mr E. B. Lothian) was granted leave to attend if he desired. Miss Valerio Algio was appointed to the vacancy on the Clutha County Council stivff rendered vacant by the resignation of Miss Joan Stewart. There were four applications. Mr W. Hudson, of the Milton Post Office staff, left last night for Stewart I Island, to which office he has been ap--1 pointed.
