Coastal Command aircraft attacked enemy shipping off the Dutch and French coasts during the night. From these operations five aircraft of the Bomber Command are missing'” REVERSING THE FIGURES FAMILIAR GERMAN TRICK (British Official Wireless.) (ißec. 10.30 a.m.) RUGBY, Oct. 14. Yesterday's offensive operations were on a heavier scale than for some time. The Germans, who put up stiff opposition, afterwards claimed to have destroyed 20 of our aircraft. This was their old trick of reversing the figures, for 20 was the number of their fighters wo destroyed. Twelve of our fighters were lost, but the pilots of two were rescued from the sea. The Germans made no admission at all of their losses. OFF NORWEGIAN COAST COASTAL COMMAND'S OFFENSIVE (British Official Wireless.) (Rec. 11.45 a.m.) RUGBY, Oct. 14. An Air Ministry communique states : “ A Beaufort of the Coastal Command attacked enemy supply ships off the Norwegian coast this afternoon. Hits were obtained on two vessels, and the crow of a third took to their boats, but low cloud and rain px - evented observation of the final results. “ In the course of offensive patrols over Northern France and the Channel to-day Fighter Command aircraft ma-chine-gunned a goods train, attacked an enemy patrol vessel, and shot down a Heikel floatplane into, the sea. None of our aircraft is missing.” RAIDS ON MALTA ENEMY PLANES DRIVEN OFF LONDON, Oct. 15. Enemy planes made two attempts to raid Malta on Monday, but were driven off by British fighters. One enemy plane was shot down.

AUDACIOUS ATTACK GERMAN WARSHIP BOMBED ENEMY'S GUNS SILENCED (British Offioial Wireless.) RUGBY, October 13. Returning with great audacity to a second attack before the delayed-action bombs dropped in the first attack had time to explode, tho pilot of a Hudson aircraft of the Coastal Command to-day put out of action a German war vessel in a Norwegian fiord. The Hudson came upon the vessel lying in a sheltered position in a fiord. It was considerably larger than a British corvette, and nine of its guns fired at the aircraft as it came in. The Hudson made its first attack at mast height, scoring two direct hits with delayed-action bombs, then turned sharply and flew in for a second low-level attack with its guns. The guns of tho German warship, which were putting up a consistent heavy curtain of anti-aircraft fire, were silenced one by one in rapid succession by gunfire from the Hudson crew, and, as the guns on the ship were put out of action, the bombs burst with heavy explosions amidships. The air-gunner who silenced most of tho Germans’ guns did so by sticking to his own guns after he had been twice wounded in the head. The aircraft returned safely to its base

to see that we in Britain play our part in the struggle on a scale which the pact between our two countries demands. The forces of Fascism are tremendously powerful, but complete and united action of the anti-Fascist forces can speed the day when these barbaric forces are destroyed. For our part wo will do all that is humanly possible to secure this end.” MR ROOSEVELT'S BELIEF RUSSIA WILL CONTINUE TO FIGHT WASHINGTON, Oct. 13. Congressional sources said that President Roosevelt now believes that the Russian army will continue to resist the German invasion forces for a prolonged period, even if Moscow falls. Tim President is of the opinion that the Rod Army will try to draw up a defensive line in an arc swinging behind the Volga River and protecting areas in which 40 per cent, of Russia’s war industries is located. This was contained in Mr Harry Hopkins’s report on his return from the conference with M. Stalin. HITLER'S ORDERS LENINGRAD TO BE RAZED TO GROUND LONDON, October 14. The Konigsberg radio warned Leningrad that the German High Command has ordered the city to bo stormed on October 15. “ The heaviest artillery will bombard tho city on Wednesday morning Tito city will also bo subject to attacks by tbe most powerful German bombers. Hitler has ordered Leningrad to bo razed to the ground if the attack is resisted, but if your citizens decide to save tho town then cease fire immediately and start negotiations , for complete capitulation,’’-
