GAOL STAFFING
NECESSITY OF ADEQUACY (P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 14. Reference to the disturbances at tho Mount Eden gaol in October last year was made by the Director of National Service (Mr J. S. Hunter), in a letter read before the Armed Forces Appeal Board to-day emphasising the necessity for adequately and safely staffing institutions of the Prisons Department. The director’s request for an adjournment sine die on behalf of William Boy Stanley, a prison warden, was granted. The letter stressed the difficulty experienced in obtaining the services of men physically and in other ways suitable for the exacting work required of them by tho department. Tho disturbances at the Mount Eden gaol indicated tho difficult and onerous nature of the service in these circumstances, and, in consideration of tho fact that it was of extreme social importance to the Dominion to ensure that an adequate staff was available to tho Prisons Department to permit the safe and efficient operation of its institutions, it was recommended that tho calling up of this reservist should be adjourned sine die.
