SOUTH OTAGO NOTES

[From Ouk Cobkespondent,} PERSONAL. Miss Jean McGregor, of Baldutha, who left at the week-end for Blenheim to join the 'Women’s Auxiliary Air Force at Woodbourne aerodrome, was on Friday afternoon the recipient of a manicure set from .the staff of tho ‘ Clutha Leader,’ where she had been bookkeeper for the past three and a-half years. Members of the staff wished her the best of luck in the future, and Miss McGregor suitably acknowledged. Mr and Mrs John Duff, of Nelson, are at present revisiting Baldutha after an absence of some years. SCOTTISH SOCIETY. This month’s social of the Clutha Scottish Society took the form of a children’s night. There was a very large attendance, and a most enjoyable programme was contributed by the young people. The Baldutha Pipe Band assisted, and at the conclusion Chief A. 15. Paterson expressed thanks to the children and those who had assisted in their training for the very fine performance given. The senior choir of 40 mixed voices, under Mr H. Rosevear, gave a delightful performance. This choir is to lake part at tbo Otago schools festival in Uuuedin this month. TENNIS. The annual meeting of the Toko. Tennis (Tub, bold last week, was presided over by Mr I. Lee. Reference was made to the fact that a number of members were on active service, and best wishes wero expressed for them. The following officebearers wore elected:—President, Hr 1. Lee; vice-presidents, Messrs T. Lockhart and 11. Morgan; secretary, to be appointed; committee—Mesdames J. Murray, C. A. Young, Miss M. Ox-ay, Messrs Young and Murray; auditor, Mr L. M. Scott. Subscriptions were left as previously, and it was decided to open the season on October 11. subject to there being no Home Guard parade. The finances remain much the same as last year, tlxe overdraft showing a slight reduction. FOOTBALL. The 1941 Rugby season in South Otago was brought to a close on Saturday, when the South Otago rep. team played Dunedin Police team at Kaitangata in aid of patriotic funds. Thex-e was a fair attendanceof the public, and as a result of the game the- sum • of £7 was handed over to the funds, S.O. Union bearing the full cost of staging the game. It was South Otago’s fourth rep. fixture, and they were defeated for tlxe first time, the score being 6-3 in favour of the police. Several changes were made in the S.O. team, four of the original selection being absent. The teams were:— Police. —Berry; Duke, Tunnell, Britienden; Black, Walker; Dawn; Holden, Turner, Thompson, Prebble, Mather, Hammond, Grimwood, Kelly. .South Otago.—Forrester; Gray, Currie, Gold; L. Haig, Brown; J. Haig; Storer, Ceilings, Murdoch, Hughes, Hale, Willocks, Washington, Stewart. The game was quite an interesting one and some nice movements were seen,, especially on the part of the Police backs. South Otago more than held their own in the first spell and were attacking quite a hit, but could not finish off their movements. Well on in the spell Kelly scored a nice try for the Police, but Black missed with the kick. There was no further scoi--ing in tho spell.' In tho second spell tho Police showed some good form, while South Otago also livened up and went close to scoring. The defence was sound on both sides, and the only scores registex-ed were a try by L. Haig, for South Otago, and a penalty kick by Black, for the Police. The game ended 6-3 in favour of the visi-tox-s. Mr C. G. Clark wds referee.

After tlie match the teams adjourned to the R.S. Hall, where they were entertained by the sub-union. A short toast list was honoured and the day was a most enjoyable oue. Among the speakers at the function was Mr X. Grant, president of the Otago Union. Prior to the big game Clutha and Crescent third grade teams played a friendly match, the resu.t being a win for Crescent. GENERAL. Some nice fish have been caught in South Otago district since the opening of the season last week. Constable W. S. Boyle, Balclutha, landed a 161 b trout from the Koau branch of the Molyneux. He secured seven fish altogether, the total catch weighing 391 b, including besides the big fish a six-pounder, two four-pounders, one 31b fish, and three 21b. Fishing in the Wniwera, Mr G. Milne, Balclutha, caught 12 fish, the heaviest being 2£lb, and the smallest lilb. Some good baskets have also been "caught in the vicinity of Kaitangata. Owing to Home Guard manoeuvres on Saturday, there were no competition matches in Balclutha Golf Club. The season will bo closed this week-end. Bowling greens in South Otago are nowlooking well, and bowlers are looking forward to a successful season. Kaitangata Club opens next week-end, and Balclutha will open the following week-end. Last meeting of Milton League of Mothers took the form of a ‘ daughters’ evening.” There was a large attendance. Mrs H. Wilson presiding. A very enjoyable programme was arranged by Mrs Moir; community singing and competitions were indulged in, while Miss E. Fiddes contriouted two songs, and Miss E. McCorkindale played two pianoforte solos. The speaker for the evening was Miss Mcßae, of the Milton Y.W.C.A. Hostel, and her subject was ‘ Our Responsibility for the Future.’ Miss Mcßae was the recipient of a posy from the president. A very enjoyable function was brought to a close with supper. Kaitangata Statistics.—E’er September; Births 4, deaths 5, marriages 3. For the quarter: Births 13, deaths 7, marriages 5. SCHORLS CHAMPIONSHIP SPORTS. The annual championship sports under the auspices of the South Otago Stale Primary Schools Sports Association were held at Balclutha on Saturday, and attracted quit© a lot of interest. Entries were good, and some excellent races were seen. The attendance was quite good, and the spectators had plenty to interest them. Kaitangata School annexed the shield with a big margin of points to spare, while the cup °for the runner-up was won by Stirling School. The cup for tabloid events was won by Port Molyneux, with Tuapeka Mouth next in order and Waiwera A and 11, and Romahapa A all tied for third place. The sports wore, as usual, well organised, and there were no delays. Mr L. McLean was president, Mr A. E. Paterson superintendent, and Mr 11. Eosevcar secretary, and those officials had the assistance' of a large band of willing am! energetic teachers At the conclusion of the sports tho trophies were presented and cheers accorded the winners.
