A meeting of the Graduates’ Association followed, the above officers holding similar positions in the association. After the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, Professor Adams invited Dr Hcrcus to address the meeting. Dr Hcrcus stressed the importance of the University in the community, and pointed out that from a business point of view alone it constituted one of the city’s best, assets. Ho mentioned the penny rate which was employed in certain English cities to foster the growth of the universities, and instanced this as a possible way in which the far-sighted policy of the early settlers could bo continued. Speaking of the lack of a suitable meeting ground for professors, lecturers, graduates, and students, Dr Hcrcus envisaged some sort of social centre, such as a university house, at which those sections of the University could meet, get to know one another better, and discuss matters of common interest. At the conclusion of the meeting members were the guests of the retiring president, Professor Adams, at an informal supper.
