PARAMOUNT CHIEF
TITLE DISPUTED (P.,V) ; AUCKLAND, June 9. "The. decision of Judge Ayson, of the High Court of the Cook Islands, given in February, 1940, awarding the title of Paramount Chief of the Cook Islands to Mrs Takau Rio Love, of Petone, was challenged in an appeal heard by Mr Justice Ostler in the Supreme Court today. Mrs Love is the wife of Captain E. T. W. Love, who is serving with the Maori Battalion overseas. The appeal was brought by Mr W. P. Browne, of Rarotonga, whose Native name is Putua Rangatira, on behalf of himself and his wife, Tuvaine Rangatira, who claims to be entitled by descent to the title of Makea Nui Ariki. The appellants alleged that Judge Ayson’s judgment was based on errors of fact. The late Ariki, Makea Nui Tiniran, whose successor is to be determined, died on January 24. 1939. The rents of certain' lands are attached to the title. The hearing was adjourned.
