WAITEMATA SEAT
HOT VACANT TILL CAPTAIN LYON’S DEATH PROVED (P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 9. Before returning to Wellington, the secretary of the Labour Party (Mr M. Moohan) said that some doubt existed as to the procedure to be followed to fill the vacancy at Waitcmata caused by the death of Captain W. J. Lyou, as proof of death had to bo furnished before the seat could be declared vacant. He had not yet gone into the legal complications, however, and no action by the Waitcmata Labour Representation Committee was likely for a week or two. The Labour Party would, of course, contest the seat, Mr Moohan added. In the last war all members of Parliament who served overseas returned safelv.
Tlie monthly social of (he Orkney and Shetland Society was held in Unity Chambers on Saturday evening. The president (Mr J. li. Sabiston) spoke of the great loss the society had suffered by the death of its patron (Mrs A. Laurenson); not only the society, but a large number of friends w T ould miss her and sincerely mourn the loss of ono whose many kind actions would remain long in their memories. The evening was spent in dancing, interspersed with the following items. —Songs, Hisses Lorna Ryan and Kathleen Hankins; stepdancing, Miss Betty Lydiato.
