KILLING PASTURE GRASS
[Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH. April 17. The urgency of the need for active steps to control the spread of the noxious Nassella tussock and if posibla to eradicate it was emphasised, at a meeting of representatives of the Waipara, Cheviot, and Kowai County Councils and of the Farmers’ Union branches in those districts held at Omihi to-day. The meeting was .convened by the Omihi branch of the Farmers’ Union. The establishment of a special board, with rating powers and Government assistance, to control the Nassella tussock was proposed.^ It was decided to ask the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Barclay) to visit the district so that he might be personally convinced of the threat to Canterbury pasture lands of the tussock* which is now growing over an area of 209 square miles, and is spreading fast. The Nasella tussock is useless as a food for stock, and drives pasture grasses, including the native varieties of tussock, out of all the areas it invades. Its seed is wind-borne, and it has been found as far south as Saltwater Creek, near Kaiapoi.
