OBITUARY
»»«. v.my The death occurred on Tuesday of Mr Robert Vince Tily, late of Green, Island, in his seventy-ninth year. Deceased, who was born in Hobart, spent , his first birthday aboard the ship Emma Prescott at Otago’Heads, his mother having brought him over from Australia to join*her husband in New Zealand. Ho was educated at Portobello, where his father was the first male school teacher. As a youth he was employed in a grocery business at Palmerston, and then returned, to Dunedin to work with Messrs Gibbs and Clayton, sawmillers, whose premises ■ stood on. the, site of the old Fire Brigade Station in ■ Cumberland street. Several years later he went to Seaward Bush .and worked in different sawmills there, and later proceeded to the Lakes district, where he packed goods for the workmen engaged in constructing the road to Skippers. Returning to Dunedin, he worked for Mr Peter Rutherford, grocer at Caversham. After some years in the North Island, working on the railway line between Eketahuna and Woodville, Mr Tily again returned to Dunedin and became bead storeman for Messrs Herbert Haynes and Co. For some years before his retirement he was the janitor of the Green Island; School. Deceased was a member of the Otago Early Settlers’ Association,' and for over 50 years was a member of the Ancient Order of Foresters. In _ his younger days he was fond of yachting, and was a member of the crew of The yacht Soray, owned by Captain Gibbs and well known in the harbour. He . was predeceased by his wife some years ago. and is survived by three daughters and one son.
