Mr L. C. Miller left to-day for Aucl£land.
Mr R. 6. Pilling, of the teaching staff of the Greymouth Technical High School, and formerly of Dunedin, has been appointed an educational officer in the Royal New Zealand Air Force. The transfer of Major W. H. Allen, New Zealand Temporary Staff, from staff officer in charge of No. 4 area, Hamilton, to the Papakura mobilisation camp and his appointment as second in command of the 2nd Infantry Training Battalion was announced at the Northern Military District head* quarters this week. From 19 applicants, Mr A, F. LeeSmith was yesterday appointed engineer to the South Canterbury Power Board in succession to Mr R. D. Veitchj who was recently appointed to a similar position with the Timaru Borough Council. Mr Lee-Smith is at present assistant engineer to the North Canterbury Power Board. Following the" announcement in a letter by the Mayor of Christchurch, Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.. who is now in training at Burnham, that he would not be a candidate, Mr E. Parlane, chairman of the Works Committee of the City Council, was selected last night to be the Labour Party’s candidate for the Mayoralty of the city. Originally, nine were nominated for tjie Mayoralty, but Mr Macfarlane and Mr J. E. Jones, chairman of the Town Planning Committee, withdrew before the ballot was conducted last night. Over 600 members affiliated to the Christchurch Labour Representation Committee were present.
