WAR EFFORT INCREASES Writing to friends in this country, Mr Garfield Todd, previously of Dunedin and now superintendent of Church of Christ missions in Southern .Rhodesia, tells of recent happenings in South Africa, “ Things are clearing considerably,” lie writes. “ Until the last few days no one knew what was going to happen on this continent. A.R.B. services were being organised in the towns of Rhodesia, and some of us were even being chosen as reporters of enemy aircraft. I was one of them. Now that the African offensive is under way and the sun is shining again, everyone feels a great deal happier. In Bulawayo you see long trains of lorries and cars passing north day by day. “ Great aerodromes have been constructed overnight at Gwclo, Salisbury, and Bulawayo, and these towns are never free from the roar of aeroplanes day or night. In every part of the sky, every minute, there are planes, and daily over the mission military aeroplanes fly. There is no doubt that things are really happening now.

“ The country is settling down to war conditions. It is possible, hut not casv, to organise things at the mission under these new conditions. This week meat has risen 33 1-3 per cent., and there is a new tax of Is (id per bag on maize, of which we use 700 bags a vear.”
