ST. KILDA TRAMS
GOVERNMENT'S ATTITUDE EXISTING SERVICE COMPLIES WITH AUTHORISING ORDERS That the existing tramway service to St. Kilda complies with the minimum requirements of the authorising orders was the substance of an official reply to the recent petition of the St. Kilda Borough Council requesting that the Government amend the order in council to the extent whereby a 10minute service would prevail to the terminus. The intimation came from the Minister of Public Works (Hon. R. Semple) and was read at last night’s meeting of the St, Kilda Borough Council. The Minister intimated that the arrangement as to the actual operation of the tramway service appealed to him as a matter of contract. “ If the service is not satisfactory,” he wrote, “ your council’s choice would seem to lie between assuming control of the system within the borough on the one hand and on the other hand negotiating a more satisfactory agreement with the City Council.” He considered that even if the council did secure a further order requiring a more frequent service to be provided such an order would not assist the council in its negotiations with the City Council, but might instead prove an embarrassment to the council in the event of negotiations with the City Council proving unsuccessful. There was no discussion, it being decided that the letter be,held over until the next meeting, each councillor in the meantime to be furnished with a copy so that due consideration could be given before discussion. The meeting was presided over by the mayor (Mr J. J. Marlow), and there wore present Crs N. D. Anderson, G. Glue, TV'. J.
