ART SOCIETY

PAINTINGS, PHOTOGRAPHS, AND GRAFTS EXHIBITS Further visits to the annual exhibition of the Otago" Art Society confirm the opinion that it is one of the best the society has held, a high standard of achievement having been reached in all the exhibits. There are 175 oil paintings and IC4 water colourSj and in these landscapes- predominate, though there are many examples of portraiture and still-life work. Brightness is a feature of the exhibition, heavy canvases with sombre backgrounds being agreeably absent, and in these troublous days a visit to the gallery is refreshing and interesting. The pictures express a wide variety of sentiment, each artist endeavouring to express in his own way his thoughts on canvas.

The sale was reported yesterday morning of ‘ Autumn Poplars,’ a water colour by Enga Washbourne. In our notice on the water colours omission was made of mention of the work of Doris F. Wilson, who has three attractive offerings, simple jn composition but skilfully treated. These are ‘ Two Thumb Range, Rangitata Gorge,’ ‘ Kowhai Tree,’ and ‘ Lagoon, Mount Potts.’

The etchings and black-and-white work, numbering 20, are also of a very gratifying standard. The use of the medium is skilfully exploited by Dr A. H. M’Lintoek, A. Lois White, James Fitzgerald, and others, and there is a wide diversity of subject. In arts and crafts, too, there is pleasing work among the 31 exhibits, demonstrating that the creative art lias not altogether been lost. in this machine age. There are some choice needlework pictures, wool tapestry pictures, examples ot needlework and. embroidery, handpainted vases, glazed earthenware, and .other exhibits. Very artistic work is shown in the 25 photographs, the work of members of the Dunedin Photographic Society. All those exhibits, which have been shmvn in salons or in other competitive collections in New Zealand and abroad, arc of a high standard. There

are also seven attractive examples of modelling. The exhibition is open daily from 10.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., and from 7.30 to 9.30 p.m.
