Swordstick led as the field entered the course proper, with Sly Fox showing up well in fourth place. (Royal Chief was tailing the field at this juncture. With a mile and a-half to go Sly Fox was leading, with Swordstick close behind. The (Buzzer was showing up well. Royal Chief and Pearl of Asia were the rear horses. With 10 furlongs to go Sly Fox’ was leading Swordstick by half a length with Second Innings and Wardress in third and fourth places. At the mile the positions were Sly Fox. Swordstick, and The Buzzer, with The Raker showing a turn of speed. Sly Fox still held the lead with six furlongs to go, The Buzzer having moved into second place ahead of Swordstick. Second Innings and Wardress followed. Royal Chief, Capricious, and Serenata were moving up. With about three furlongs to go Wardress took the lead by a length from Capricious, leading The Buzzer by slightly loss than that. Sly Fox and Little Robin were in third and fourth places. Entering the home stretch Capricious and Wardress went away from the rest of the field, taking a lead of four lengths from Sly Fox and Taurangi Little Robin and Serenata were running almost equal for fifth place, and Royal Chief wasi showing a rapid burst of pace. The /fear horses swiftly bridged the gap between Capricious and Wardress, Taurangi showing up prominently. The five horses were almost bunched together as the winning post was neared, but Serenata got up by a head to beat Taurangi. Little Robin was third, with Capricious (who was afterwards placed third) and Wardress fourth and fifth. It was an exciting finish, with at one stage a possibility of Royal Chief obtaining a place. His final spurt brought him close. Time, 3min 20 4-ssec.
