FARMER'S GESTURE WILL GARRY ON WITHOUT SON [Pek United Puess Association.] NEW PLYMOUTH, November 8. “ I have given this matter consideration since lodging an appeal, and it seems fo me that appeals are, being made in some cases where people could do a little extra work and let the men go, so I will'withdraw my application,” stated Mr R. U. Phillips, a farmer, of Midhirst, before the Taranaki Manpower Committee at Stratford to-day. “ I don’t want my son at home when others are with the Colours,” Mr Phillips continued. “It will mean extra work, but I think 1 can manage all right.” ‘‘ It is refreshing to have someone come here and say what you have said.” remarked the chairman (Mr L. D. Hickford). “In any case, your eon will not he required now to go into camp till January. I think your attitude is commendable, and it would be pleasant to see others follow your example.” In the application, the son said he was running a farm of 112 acres at Midhirst with the aid of his father, who was handicapped by - the loss of the use of one hand. There would be 50 cows and pigs. Subsequently other applications were withdrawn, but the reason was not stated.
