An enjoyable afternoon tea was given at the Savoy on Thursday afternoon by Miss Florence Pacey in honour of Miss Betty Haskins, of Dunedin* who has been accepted 1 as a nurse for overseas service. The guest of honour received a parting gift and a spray of lily of the valley, Mrs J. G. Butler extending best of wishes in her now sphere. Those present were Mrs MTviulay, Mrs Ronald Jones, Mrs Butler, Misses Haskins (2), Dorothy Arundel, Isa Duff, Rodger, and Hickson.

Miss Mary Connor was the guest of honour at a “ kitchen ” evening given by Mr and Mrs H. S. Howe at their homo in Musselburgh Rise on Saturday last. The guests included Mrs Connor, Mr and Mrs D. Green, Mr and Mrs R. G. Trower, Mr and Mrs W. Fraser, Mrs Shepherd, Mrs Kallon, Mrs M'lntyre, Mrs Buchanan. Mrs R Edwards, Misses G. Chalmers, N Edwards, E. Edwards, P. Edwards, J Youugsou, M. Youngson, V Marshall, Shepherd, Messrs J. E. Thompson, G. Miller, S Moo, W. M'Gombie, and G Murdoch.

A pleasant afternoon was spent on the 0.L.8.A. greens on Wednesday, the occasion being rinks play, organised by the Leith ladies, to raise funds for the centre. The weather was fine, making play very enjoyable. Afternoon tea was served, and this ended a happy and profitable afternoon. The winning team was North-east Valley, Mrs Ansell (skip), Mrs Rigby, Mrs Pettet, and Mrs Bruce (lead), Runner-up was West Harbour, Mrs Colombus (skip), Mrs Jarvis, Mrs French, and Mrs Fitzpatrick (lead).

Her Excellency Lady Galway, while visiting Port Chalmers on Monday evening, met the mayoress (Mrs T. Scollay) and some members of the local committees and discussed patriotic activities. Her Excellency gave a very instructive talk to the members, and mentioned that at the present time there is a great need for warm quilts for the unfortunate victims of air raids who have lost everything. On Wednesday afternoon the committee of the St. Clair Women’s Club met at afternoon tea at the Savoy in honour of the retiring president. Mrs D. A. Young, who will shortly be leaving Dunedin to take up her residence at Hokitika. The ladies met in the lounge, where Mrs Douglas Barton, president of the club, asked Mrs Young to accept on behalf of the committee a bouquet of roses and sweet peas; most tastefully arranged, as an expression of appreciation of the manner in which Mrs Young had carried out her duties during the past year. All present regretted her departure and expressed their best wishes for the future. Afternoon tea was served the tables being charmingly decorated. Those , present were Mesdames Douglas Barton, D A Young, J M'Lachlan. D. Paine. P Bardsley, P. J Rendel C Thomson, Wm. Turnbull. J. Y. Love. W J. M'Lauchlan. E. T. Ombler, H. Archbold. Wm. The Poetry Circle of the Otago Women’s Club held the final meeting for the year at tho Tea Kiosk, in the Upper Botanic Gardens. There was a large gathering of members and friends, and the meeting took the form of a “ tea and talk,” interspersed with musical items. After tea had been served at a long table in the enclosure, which was very attractively decorated with the lovely flowers, several part songs were given by Mesdames W. J White, C. F. Roberts, and L Black, with Mrs P. Dick at the piano, while several national songs by all were most successful. Some excellent suggestions for next year’s programme were submitted by members. Miss Holford proposed a vote of thanks to the performers, and several members thanked the committee for the delightful afternoon and also for the happy and successful year’s work. The meeting closed with the National Anthem, and then members strolled at will through the rhododendron dell and the beautiful azalea garden.

The Kaikorai Presbyterian Sunday School Hall presented a gay appearance on Wednesday evening, when the Kaikorai branch of the League of Mothers held its social evening. Mrs Dawson presided over a large attendance of members and friends, and welcomed members from various branches, also Mrs Merrington (past provincial president) Mrs Sedtlon (Otago provincial president), and members of tho Provincial Executive A most attractive programme of games and items was presented The choir, conducted by Mrs Dawson, opened the programme with .hree delightful numbers, followed by two pianoforte duets bv Mesdames 'lhompson and Edmiston'. also two amusing playettes— Engaging a Maid ‘ and ‘ The Sewing Circle.' The ‘Centennial March.’ played by Mrs Edmiston and sung by the choir, provided a novel feature when members in oldfashioned costume danced a reel Mrs Sonntag, on oehalf of tho members, presented dainty shoulder sprays to Mrs Merrington and Mesdames' Seddon, Paterson Dodds M‘Gregor. Dawson, M'Crostie. Mrs Merrington and Mrs Soddon suitably replied Mrs Paterson (Roslyn) thanked the league on behalf of the visitors for a most enjoyable evening. artists taking part:—Solos, Mrs Chisholm and Miss Mac Lean; pianoforte solo, Mrs Wallace; dialogue, Mesdames Laurence and Thomson; play given by the Cargill Road Fireside Club; two items by the Mornington Choir. Posies were presented to retiring members of the committee Dodd, Cumberbeach, and Ferry), and also to the artists and gifts and posies to Mrs Teller and Miss Marriage in appreciation of their untiring efforts in the creche Mrs Seddon emphasised the great need for mothers to give care and thought to the upbringing of their children at the present time in order to prepare them for a greatly changed world after the war. Speaking of the power of prayer, Mrs Dodd told of the wonderful results experienced in her own family at the present time through this agency. Mrs Herrington, on behalf of the visitors, tendered thanks for a very pleasant evening, and at the same time spoke of the great joy and friendship to be derived from the league.

To celebrate the ninth anniversary of the Broad Bay Women’s Institute,

a,successful concert was held on Tuesday last, the local hall being well tilled. The president (Mrs A M‘Taggart) occupied the chair Representatives from the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union from Portobelo and Otakou- were present, and from the Women’s Institutes from Tomahawk and Macandrew Bay. while many letters and telegrams were received conveying greetings Mrs Karetai spoke on behalf of the W.D.F.U., and Mrs Stapleton for the W. 1., both being members of their respective executives. During the evening sprays were handed to the president and secretary from the institute in appreciation of their work during the year. A spray was also presented to Mrs Vickers (president of the Macandrew Bay Institute). The programme consisted of piano solos by Mrs Barkman, duet by Mesdames Harley and H. M‘Taggart, and songs, sketches, and plays by members of the Macandrew Bay and Broad Bay Institutes. After supper the hall was cleared for dancing, Private W. Scott acting as M.C. The accompanists for the evening were Mesdames Barkman and Porriman.
