NEW ZEALAND CUP THE FIELD REVIEWED , From 1865, when the race was first established, until 1882 inclusive the New Zealand ■ Cup was known as the Canterbury Jockey Club Handicap, and the first race was won by Rob Roy. The first two races were run over a mile and a-lialt', but the dis- < lance was increased to two miles in 1867, when a three-year-old named Magenta, * carrying 8.0, won in 3min 47sec. In 1883 j the name of the race was changed to the New Zealand Cup, and Tasman, a five-year- j old carrying 8.9, beat XI other starters, j Since then 76 races have been run, and j the two largest fields were 22, when Yours Truly won last year, and 21 in 1908, known ; as Downfall’s Cup. Thirteen three-year- j olds, 20 four-year-olds, 18 five-year-bids, 13 ■ six-year-olds, and 14 aged horses have been i returned winners during that period. In- j digo, who dead-heated with Warstep 26 years ago, was the last three-year-old to score,, and it is now some years since one of that age has contested the race. In this year’s field there are five four-year-olds, four five-year-olds, five six-year-olds, four seven-year-olds, and Swordstick, who is eight years old, is the veteran of the 19 starters. , Since the appearance of the handicaps Royal Chief, who was allotted the same | impost as he would have to carry under the weight-for-age scale, 9.6, has been the popular selection, and as the conditions attached to the race provide that no horse can be rehandicapped to carry more than weight-for-age, his two successes at Trentham last month did not entail a penalty. If he was entitled to 9.6 seven weeks ago, when the handicaps were declared, he must be considered well handicapped now, and promises to start at a short price tomorrow. Now six years old, he appears to be right at the peak of his form, and his greatest danger of defeat is more likely to come from the chance of interference than being beaten either for stamina or pace. H’aurangi, because she is a daughter of that successful sire "Beau Pere, will have a following, but she has yet to be tried over two miles, and appears to be badly handicapped in being placed within 121 b of Royal Chief and having to give The Buzzer 2ib over a distance he has shown himself master of. The Buzzer, with an Auckland Cup and second in the New Zealand Cup two years ago, is the proved stayer, and he will have the services of one of, if not the best horseman m the over Bst division in the. Dominion. | Sly,Fox, started favourite in this race j two ye'ars ago, and after leading for nearly a mile and three-quarters ran off the course. Ha is a much-improved horse since then, and won the Mitchelson Clip, a mile and a-half, last month. He will be ridden by C. G. Goulsbro, who won this race three years ago on Cerne Abbas. Te Kawiti, Auckland’s sole representative, lost caste by running badly at Motukarara last Saturday, but it is possible that tho form he showed there was not correct. Capricious ran second to Yours Truly in this race last year, and followed that form • up by running third in the Metropolitan I Handicap on the fourth day, and second in the Dunedin Cup. She finished sixth at Motukarara last week, and has been working well since. Tho distanoo'is not likely to trouble her. Rassaform has not raced well this season, and does not show his best form on hard going. Swordstick is a most consistent performer up to a mile and a-quarter, but must be taken on trust for a two-mile race, though lie finished a good second in the Great Autumn Handicap, a mile and a-half, last Easter. The Ring is another that only has form up to a mile and a-quarler to recommend her. Dictate will not be troubled by the distance, as he Las placings to his credit in both the Auckland and New Zealand Cups, and he showed that he is returning to form by his good second to Second Innings at Motukarara, but, unfortunately, he is reported to be showing the effects of the hard tr&cks* Second Innings has several successes over distances to a mile and a-quarter to recommend his chances, and is now at the top of his form, but is another that has to be taken on trust for two miles. Wardress won well at Rangiora on Labour Day, over a mile and' a-quarter, but ran badly at Motukarara at the end of the same I week. The distance may bo beyond her measure. Little Robin is another that has yet to prove himself over a distance, and the class looks too rich for him.

Settlement is best described ns a horse of moods, and has not been racing well this season.

The Raker emerged from hack class at the end of last season by winning five races on end, and this season has won twice out of four starts, but not in New Zealand Cup company. Serenata, one of the best bred ones in the race, has no credentials to recommend her for a two-miles journey, but is trained by T. R. George, who rarely places his horses wrongly. Pearl of Asia is another of George’s team, and the same remarks apply to her chance. Kilometre won a couple of hack races lass season, and another over a mile this season, and will effect a surprise if he wins. Auto Sweep failed to get into the money in a dozen starts last season, and out of 11 starts has won over seven furlongs and a mile and a-quarter in hack company this season. He appears to be flattered by being included in this race. There have been many surprises in the New Zealand Cup, and it is quite on the cards that there will be another to-morrow, but tho form horses appear to be ROYAL CHIEF, THE BUZZER, ISLY POX or CAPRICIOUS. AT RICCARTON TO-MORROW FIELDS AND ANTICIPATIONS The 1940 New Zealand carnival will open to-morrow at Biccarton, when the following excellent card will be presented. PROVED STAYERS IN CUP

With only two races, Auckland and New Zealand Cups, run over two miles in the Dominion, it is not surprising, that so few of the horses engaged in this year’s New Zealand Cup have been raced over two miles. Royal Chief, The Buzzer, Sly Fox, Capricious, Passaform, Dictate, and Second Innings are the only horses in this year’s Cup that have been tried out over that distance, and only The Buzzer has been a winner, with Sly Pox, Capricious, and Die-, tate place-getters in the Dominion. Royal Chief finished close up fourth in last year’s Cup under 9.6, and there is no doubt regarding his stamina. The Buzzer is a winner of the Auckland Cup, and only beaten a head in the New Zealand Cup. Dictate has finished third twice in the Auckland Cup and third in the New Zealand. Cup, Capricious finished second in the latter race last November, and Sly Fox third in the Auckland Cup last December, These five have the best credentials for Saturday’s two miles journey, and it looks as if the winner is most likely to come from that division. The following are their placings this season:— Royal Chief.—Fourth in seven-furlong race at Ashburton in September; unplaced in six furlongs on first day at Wingatui last month, and third on second day over a _ mile. Won the Wellington Handicap, mile and three furlongs, under 9.7 at Trentham last month, beating Sly Fox 8.8 and Little Robin 7.9. Other Cup candidates in this race were The Ring 7.11, Pearl of Asia 7.2, and Auto Sweep 7.3. On the third day of the meeting he won the Harcourt Stakes, mile and three furlongs, under 9.4, beating Sir Cameron 7.12, Te Kawiti 9.0. and The Ring 8.13. The Buzzer.—Unplaced in a six-furlong race at Marton in September, and also unplaced in a similar race at Foxton a'week later. Won over a mile and a-quarter under 9.0 at the Otaki-Maori meeting last month, Little Robin 7.12 and Pearl of Asia 7.8 being among the unplaced division. In his only other start this season he won the Waverley Cup, mile and a-quarter, with 9.3, but there were no Cup candidates in the Geld. Sly Fox—Unplaced in the Flying Handicap at Wanganui in September, and again over a mile and'a furlong on the second day. Fourth in the Avondale Cup under 8.2 the same month, and third the next day with 8.3 in a mile and a-quarler. Won the Mitchelson Cup, mile and a-half, last month, carrying 8.1, this success earning him a 31b penalty in the Cup. At Trentham last month, with 8.8, ran second to Royal Chief, 9.7, over a mile and three furlongs. Behind this pair were Little Robin 7.9 (third), The Ring 7.11, Pearl of Asia 7.2, and Auto Sweep 7.3. On the third day, with 8.13, he finished third to The Ring 7.9 and Homily 7.4 over the same distance, with Little Robin 7.10 close up fourth. Capricious;—Ran unplaced each day at Wingatui last month, and last week at Motukarara finished sixth under 8.0 over a mile and a-quarter, won by Second ■lnnings 7.4 i, with Dictate 7.8 i and Swordstiok 5.7 second and third respectively. Passaform.—Unplaced over seven furlongs at Ashburton in September, and again in the Geraldine Cup. On the second day of the latter meeting, with 8.7, ha finished fast into third place to Petersham 7.10 and Swordstiok 7.11. Unplaced at Wingatui last month over a mile and two and a-half furlongs, and the following week, with 8.2, ran third to Swordstiok 8.0 and Wardress 7.8 over a mile and a-quarter at Washdyke, Dictate 7.11, The, Raker 7.10, and Settlement 7.4 being behind him. At Motukarara last Saturday he finished second last, utwor 8.2, to Second Innings 7.4-i, Dictate 7.8 i, and Swordstiek 8.7. Dictate.—Commenced the season with six unplaced performances over seven furlongs, a mile, a mile and a-quarter, and nine furlongs, at Riccarton, at Washdyke over a mile and a-quarter, and in the Rangiora Cup, also a mile and a-quarter, last month. In this race he carried 8.10, and started favourite. Wardress 9.0 winning from Settlement 7.11 and Second Innings 7.13. In the Buchanan Memorial Handicap last Saturday, carrying 7.8 i, he was just beaten by Second Innings 7.45-, and Swordstiok 8.7, Te Kawiti 8.8, Wardress 8.5, Passaform 8.2, and Capricious 8.0 were behind him. Second Innings.—Has had only two races this season. Carrying 7.13, he finished third Rangiora Cup last month, and last Saturday, under 7.4 J, won the Buchanan Handicap. Summing up the above form, Royal Chief and The Buzzer have the best credentials for to-morrow’s race, and, provided they obtain good runs, appear to be the hardest to beat.
