Mr F. Tyson left by the 11.35 express! this morning for Wellington. Mr Guy Tapley left this morning for? Christchurch. The mayor of Wellington (Mr T. C. A. Hislop) told a deputation yesterday that he would definitely stand again as a candidate for the mayoralty. Signor Ignaz. Friedman, the noted Polish pianist, who is giving a recital in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall to-night in aid of the Otago Patriotic Fund, arrived' by air from tha north this afternoon, and is staying' at the City Hotel. One of New Zealand’s best-known Great War and commercial servica pilots, Squadron-leader T. W. White* E.D., has been promoted to the temperary rank of wing commander in the Royal New Zealand Air Force I, Wing-commander White retired early last year from commercial flying, buti sought service again as soon as the war? started, being appointed shortly afterwards to command the training school at Weraroa. He began flying in 1916* and shot down several German aeroplanes before being himself shot downin 1918, from a height of 18,000 ft. Ha landed in enemy territory, and wai made a prisoner of war. Much of his peace-time commercial flying was dona in association with Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, and later with East Coasfl Airways, for which he was chief pilot* and Union Airways. At his retirement!, he had spent 6,500 hours in the air*' and was never involved in an in which a passenger or pilot received! injury. He was the first pilot in Newj Zealand to receive the Efficiency Decoration.
The High Commissioner for th* United Kingdom (Sir Harry Batterhee» has advised the mayor (Mr A. HAllen) that he is making provisional plans to visit the South Island later in the present month with Lady Batterbee. At present, he expects to arriva in Dunedin on Monday, November 25J and to leave on Wednesday, November 27.
The Rt. Hon. J. G, Coates, member; of the War Cabinet, arrived in Dunedin by plane this morning, and after inspecting the military camps at Wingatui and Forbury Park, was to return, north by air this afternoon.
