LAWN TENNIS

[By Recorder.]

Fixture. November 9.—Mixed doubles Yankee tournament for M‘Millau Cup, at Logan Park. W. J. Smith’s Visit. W. J. Smith, who is completing his medical course at Christchurch, spent a short holiday here over the week-end. Turning out for University on Saturday, he shattered the hopes of its opponents, Kaituna. Smith’s shots are more adapted to grass courts than asphalt, but all the same he produced tennis of a sparkling nature rarely seen in Dunedin. Interclub Matches. Fair weather conditions prevailed for the interclub matches last Saturday. Chief interest' centred in the University-Kaituna match, which resulted in a win for Varsity by 9 sets to 6, although Kaituna actually finished ahead on games, 104 to 96. Young did more than his share for Kaituna with a meritorious win over the more brilliant Smith, Young was the acme of steadiness, and won many passing shots down the sideline. Sherriff tried his best against Childs, but the latter met pace or steadiness with similar tactics, and often left his opponent standing with tricky drop and angle shots. M’Kinnon, who has speeded up his game this season, just failed against Baird, who had to go all out to win. Elliffe played his first match in A grade, and with good, forceful tennis accounted for Liddell, 9-5. Miss Kerr gave ‘a feast of fast stroking drives and had no trouble with her single. Miss Jolly had to concentrate well to beat a good match player in Miss Brown. Miss Hamer played a good hard driving game to win from Miss Egglestone, 9-2. The fourth women’s single, was a long-drawn-out game, and hardly up to A grade standard. In the doubles Baird and Childs stole a march with rush tactics on Young and Sherriff, who took too long to settle down. Smith and Liddell were too strong for M’Kinnon and Elliffe. Miss Thompson and Miss Brown found Miss Kerr and Miss Jolly a formidable combination, and Miss Egglestone and Miss Spademan wore down Miss Hamer and Miss Hollamby for. a close win, 9-6. The three mixed doubles played were all won by Varsity with similar scores, 7-5. the best of these being the first, Smith and Miss Thompson v. Young and Miss Kerr, when all four played tennis of a high_order. St. Clair overwhelmed St. Kilda by 13 sets to 3. For the winners Wilson kept well on the move and emerged successfully against Sadd, 9-2. For St. Kilda Alexander and Miss Drake helped to stem the tide with a creditable win in the mixed doubles from M’Kenzie and Miss M’Phail.

North-east Valley easily defeated Caversham. The team work and experience of the Valley brought it home with the loss of only three sets. All members of the latter team played serviceable games, and for Caversham Mrs M‘Pherson won the first

single, Miss Smith and Miss Ridley the second doubles, while the last set of the day went to Galloway and Miss Ridley. Cosy Dell and Moana finish®! acrae encounter, the former winning 9-7, with a iiitferonce of only live games. Guy showed his old form to boat Falconer. The latter led 5-3 and 40-love, but from then on he could not orcak through Guy’s accuracy. Caraeron is making less mistakes this season, and was too strong for Murray, who is short of practice. Clark accounted for Chisholm by a hi" margin. In the women's singles Miss Logan and Miss Flett had good wins, but Miss Jenkinson and Miss Campbell evened for Cosy Dell. Falconer avenged himself against Guy in the mixed doubles, when, ably supported by Mrs Clarke, they defeated Guy and Miss Logan, 7-1. The veteran, Jensen, was the only one to win all his games. The Roslyn-St. Patrick s match was a one-sided game, but it is interesting to note the convincing wins of Duthie, Mrs Foxcroft, and Miss Mackie. In the B grade two interesting matches were fought. Mornington beat St. Clair on games only, sets being even, and- Kaituna narrowly defeated St. Kilda, 9-7. The women’s B grade is proving a very popular competition. Roslyn and North-east Valley were two good winners in the C grade. M'Millan Cup.

Good entries have been received for the mixed doubles handicap tournament for the M’Millan Cup, to be played at Logan Park on Saturday. These entries have been strongly reinforced by 35 soldiers from the Southland Regiment. Partners have been already arranged for them. It has been decided to accept late enrites up till 11 o’clock on Saturday morning. They may be lodged with either Mr E. S. Wilson or the Otago Sports Depot. The entry fee is small, and tennis balls are being provided free. This tourney serves the dual purpose of providing an enjoyable afternoon’s play and of creating a pleasant social atmosphere. Players are reminded that play will commence at 1 o’clock.
