BOROUGH OF WEST HARBOUR

MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the West Harbour Borough Council was held last night, there being present the mayor (Mr A. Smith), Crs P. H. Davis, F. H. Hudson, K. T. Monk, J. Robb, A. Macdonald, J. L. Page, F. Mitchell, J. Coutts, J. Robertson, and T. F. Rodger. CORRESPONDENCE. Messrs H. 0. Richdale, R. David, and W. Milton (Ravensbourne) wrote asking that faulty drainingo from a number of houses above the main road be attended to. —Referred to the Works Committee tor attention. Mr G. Denno wrote requesting that t\vo fuchsia trees bordering on his property in Montague street be removed, as they constituted a menace to his and his neighbours’ drains. —It was decided that the trees be' removed. The council approved of Mr D. C. Hutton’s application for a building permit and also granted permission for him to install a septic tank on his property. GENERAL. The Finance Committee’s recommendation that the town clerk’s salary be subsidised while he was carrying out Territorial training was agreed to. The committee's report was adopted, and accounts amounting to £322 3s 8d were passed for payment. The removal of household refuse, a matter which was left over from the previous meeting, was again given consideration. After discussion, it was decided to recommend to the next council that a flat house rate should be struck for the institution of a service to operate throughout the borough. Cr Monk raised the question of ships which came to Ravensbourne to water. Ho stated that for three days the residents on the higher parts of the borough behind the fertiliser works were unable to receive any water while a vessel was being supplied. Ho suggested that the hours between mid-

night and 6 e.m. alone should be used foe this purpose. , It was decided that Crs Rodger, Robb* Monk, and Macdonald be appointed a com« mittee to discuss the matter with the Dominion Fertiliser Company Ltd. A motion of sympathy was passed in th« customary manner on the recent death of au old and respected resident of the borough in the person of Miss M’Lennon, of Sawyers Bay. The secretary was .instructed to forward a message of condolence to the deceased’s relatives.
