LOADED GUN IN CAR

BREACH OF TRAFFIC LAW [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, November 4. “ This case will draw attention to the regulations,” commented Mr W. 11. M'Kean, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Otahuhu to-day, when George Walter Cullen, a farmer, was charged with carrying a loaded rifle in a motor vehicle without a police permit. Senior Sergeant Daly, who prosecuted, said the offence was a breach of traffic regulations under the amendments introduced in July last. Cullen and a friend had been out rabbit shooting, and on the way home Cullen had placed a loaded rifle on t]ie seat. While the car was travelling over a rough road the rifle had discharged and the defendant had been ■ severely wounded, the bullet just missing his heart. “ It is possible that the defendant did not know of the regulation,” said the magistrate. It was possible that few people were aware of the necessity for a permit. He would impose only a nominal penalty. The defendant was fined 5s and costs (12s).
