WELLINGTON TRAM FARES
COUNCIL DECIDES ON INCREASE PRICE TRIBUNAL NOT CONSULTED [Per Uxited Press Association.] WELLINGTON, November 4. The Labour members of the Wellington City Council made a spirited attack on a decision reached by the Finance Committee (the full council) of the Wellington City Council in committee to-night to increase the tram fares without making application to the Price Fixation Tribunal for permission to do so. Labour speakers described the decision as a challenge to the tribunal’s authority. '
The decision was first reached in committee, but the council resumed openly for discussion of an amendment proposed by Cr C. H. Chapman, M.P., to rescind the decision. One nonLabour member, Cr M. Fraser, voted witji the Labour councillors, the division being eight votes to five.
