In the latter case they must be brief. Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral ami Lady Galway, who arrive in Dunedin to-morrow, will bo at Wain’s Hotel during their stay here. Mrs Lily Haggitt returned during the week from a visit to Queenstown. Mrs M’Leait, Qhristchureh, who has been the guest of Mrs J. Black, Stuart street, has returned home. Miss Claire Stevenson left to-day on a visit to Lake Hawea, where she will be the guest of Mrs J. Rowley. Miss Beryl Fanning, Christchurch, who has been the guest of her aunt, Mrs ■J. Skinner, has returned home. Mrs H. 0. M'Farlane returned yesterday from a visit to Southland and Lake Hawea. Mrs J. S. Nicholson and her sister Mrs Kirkwood are spending a holiday at Wanaka. Mrs E. H. Runnerstrum has returned from a visit to her daughter, Mi’s J. M‘D. Stevenson, Makarora. Mrs E. Garden and family arrived from Wellington by plane on Wednesday, and will in future reside in Dunedin. Mr and Mrs E. B. Curtiss, who have been staying with Mrs Lily Haggitt, Driver’s road, loft on Thursday for Tauranga. Mrs J. R. Paterson has returned from a three weeks’ visit to Wellington, where she was the guest of Mrs Stronach Paterson.

Mrs C. Mackio Bcgg is visiting Wellington on business of tlio AVomen’s National War Auxiliary. She will remain in Wellington until next week in order to meet her son, Dr A. C. Bcgg, who is returning from England.

Mrs Robert Spinner has left on her return to Gisborne, after having spent an extended holiday as the guest of her parents, Mr and Mrs Christie C. Forno, of Oomaru.

On October 21 a kitchen party in honour of Miss Myra Scott (Balelutha), whose marriage to Sydney Ronald Taylor, Belmont Lane, took place last Saturday. was given by Mrs .1. M'Crorie, St. Kilda. The truest of honour received many useful gifts. Games, competitions, and musical items filled in a delightful evening.

Mrs Dunn, a New Zealander, who was a member of the Women’s Royal Naval Service, was killed during an air raid on _ Gillingham, when the shelter in which she was taking cover received a direct hit. Mrs Dunn’s father, Mr J. Dripps, lives at Grafton, Auckland. Mrs Dunn’s death is believed to be the first casualty of the war in the Women’s Royal Naval Service. The staff of Messrs D. 11. Blaekie, who stocked the “ dug-out ” in the Octagon on Saturday last and were also in charge for the morning, took the very creditable sum of £l2O in four hours. This amount was paid in to the Army Queen fund.

Intending patrons will no/doubt be pleased to know that the Caversham Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild is again bolding its garden fete in Lady Sidey’s beautiful grounds at Corstorphine, on Saturday afternoon, November 9. Last year hundreds of visitors wore charmed to view the delightful surroundings of this historic; home. This time visitors will see Lady Sidey’s garden at its best.

Miss Lorraine Norton, of Sydney, an examiner for the Royal Academy of Dancing, London, will arrive in Dunedin on Sunday next to examine the children’s grades in the Royal Academy syllabus. Miss Norton, who is now connected with _ Miss Frances Scully, of Sydney, originally had her own school in Birmingham, England. The examinations will be held on Monday, and in the evening Miss Norton has "arranged a class for members of the Royal Academy in Dunedin.

The Main, branch of the Home Economics Association hold its final evening for the year, at the residence of Mrs M. A. Spratt, Mrs Westwood presiding. Representatives from various other branches were present. .Winners of competitions wore: Mrs M'Connell, Mrs Darraeott, Mrs Payne, and Mrs Spratt. Somrs were rendered by Mrs Westwood. The opportunity was taken to present Miss Stevenson, St. Leonards, a member of the Dunedin North brand), with a small gift as a token of appreciation of her kindness to Maia members. Supper concluded a very pleasant evening. Croquet Interclub Matches.

Interelub matches will commence next week. There are five teams in A grade, seven in B grade, seven in ’ C grade, and five in the “ fern ” matches. The following is the draw for Tuesday:

G Grade.—November 5: Punga v Taieri, at Punga; Logan Park v Watea, at Logan Park; Montccillo v Tainui, at Montecilio. Ferns. —November 9: Logan Park v Tainui, at association lawns.

Combined Ex-Girls’ Service Group. The seventh annual meeting of the Combined Ex-Girls’ Service Group was held, at St. Philomena’s College last week. Rev, Mother Ignatius welcomed 74 members present. Apologies were received from 28 members. The president, Mrs C. R. Martin, extended a welcome, too, and reviewed the year’s work, which had proved most satisfactory both from a financial and a service point of view. Respite war conditions, this year has been the most successful since the inception of the service group. The summary of the year’s activities was read by the registrar, Miss Audrey Meek. The financial statement was read by Miss Pat. Duncan. Office-bearers for 1940-41 were elected as follows: —President. Mrs C. R. Martin ; vice-presidents, Mrs Spencer G. Sconlar and Mrs A. J, Dowling; secretary, Miss Pat. Duncan ; assistant secretary. After the business part of the programme items were contributed bv members of St. Philomena’s ExPupils’ Association pianoforte solo. On display was a large assortment of baby clothes brought by members for the Oncen Marv Maternity Hospital. Miss F. Ross (Austral-Gir-tonl proposed a vote of thanks to the retiring committee, and Mrs C. E. Begg fO.G.H.S. 1 ) to the hostesses. Supper brought an enjoyable evening to a close.
