CIVIC AFFAIRS

COUNCIL COMMITTEE REPORTS Following are the principal items from the reports of tho various committees to come before the meeting of the City Council on Monday night:— Water Consumption. ’The report by the city engineer relative to the consumption of water during the past week indicates that up to October 20 the daily consumption was 5.800.000 gallons, but since that date the consumption lias been steadily rising and has reached a consumption of 6.785.000 gallons. This increased con 4 sumption has resulted in a loss of over 1,000,000 gallons a day. It is evident from tho night flow records that a very largo percentage of these losses is due to hoses, and it appears that in a large number of cases hoses are being used in such a manner as to cause wastage of water. Under the council’s by-law it is an offence for any person to use water from the city waterworks in a wasteful manner, and also to use a hose between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., or to lease a hose unattended.

Swimming Baths at Mornington. A report has boon received from the city engineer on the subject of the construction of a children’s swimming pool for the Mornington district. The proposal submitted provides for the construction of a pool 30ft by 25ft with a total depth of 3ft, with connections necessary to fill same from the council’s water mains and for emptying the baths into the foul sewer in Hawthorne Avenue. The site selected for the baths is well sheltered and situated on the Town Belt, on the south side of Hawthorne Avenue, between Queen’s Drive and Parkhill Avenue. Details of the construction and particulars as, to the site are shown on the plan prepared by the city engineer. Tho estimated cost of tho work, provided full subsidy scheme 13 labour is available, is £230, and provision for this expenditure has been made in the current year’s allocations. The Reserves Committee recommends that the proposal as submitted he approved, and that authority be granted to make applictaion to the Department of Labour for the necessary fully-subsidised labour to carry out the work. Renewal Fund. In view of the fact that any money standing to the credit of the Drainage Board’s renewal fund bank account cannot bo placed on temporary deposit with the board or the City Council, the Finance Committee has considered the question of the disposal of these surplus funds, and recommends that an account he opened in the Post Office .Savings Bank, and that the chairman of the board (Mr A. H. Allen), Mr E. J, Smith, and the treasurer (Mr H. H. Henderson) be appointed trustees to operate on this account.

Waipori Tunnel. The reports of the consulting engineers on the progress of work on the No. 2 supply tunnel at Wiapori Falls for the weeks ended October 5 and 12 show that the contractors had 81 men employed on the work, and during the period a further 227 ft was driven in the main tunnel and 312 ft; of concrete lining placed. It is anticipated that the driving of the tunnel will be completed by the end of November and the tunnel ready for use in February next.

Lindsay’s Cheek Channel. The city engineer has been instructed to act in connection with the removal of graved and silt from the Lindsay’s Creek channel, between North road and Craigleith street, at an estimated cost of £SO.
