RECALLS IN CHIEF PIANO SOLO ONE DECISION REACHED THIS MORNING The third section of the chief piano solo contest was heard this morning before Dr T. Vernon Griffiths, when the thirty-ninth annual festival of the Dunedin Competitions Society entered its sixth day. As this was the final section the recalls were announced, and they will be placed to-morrow night. duly one class was given a straightout cleeisiou this morning, the remainder not going beyond the recall stage. Most of the recalls will reappear to-night, when an interesting programme will be presented! in His Majesty’s Theatre. This will include the Dunedin Operatic Society’s ballet, ‘ Dal Masque,’ a calisthenic display by a team from Messrs Coulls Somerville and Wilkie Ltd., ‘Pastorale,’ a children’s action chorus to be given by Miss Edna Lunglcy's juveniles, piano duos and solos, character recitals, humorous recitations, ladies’ trios, quartets, and solos, ballet dances and dance duos. This morning’s results were: — INSTRUMENTAL. Judge: Dr T. Vernon Griffiths. PIANO SOLO, under 11, ‘ From Old Holland,’ ‘ Windmills’ (Schramm). Second section. Joan Satterthwaitc, 86 points ... 1 lan Kerr, 85 points ... 2 Joyce M'Gregor, 84 points 3 Very highly commended : Sybil Westland, Robin Bartleft, Margaret Berryman, Norma Lane. Highly commended: Jean Stewart, Alma Johnson, Leslie Jackson. Commended ; Betty Cleland, Colin Graham, Joan Fulton, June Tregilgus (Mosgiel), Patricia Stapleton (Macandrew Bay). Also competed: John Mathieson, Moya M'Gregor (Middlemarch), Irene Marston, Norma Graves, Thelma Small. The piece selected was not a very suitable one, said the Judge, although it was pretty. It was rather difficult for the youthful players. The class had given very good performances indeed, and he had difficulty in separating the three placed candidates. CHIEF PIANO SOLO. CONTEST, (a) Test piece, ‘ Ballade in G Minor ’ (Chopin); (b) own selection; (c) sight reading test. Winner to hold Holier Trophy for one year.—There were five competitors in this important class, and the recalls were Misses Clare Neale, Margaret Boult (Oturehua), and Mr William Clarke. PIANO DUET, 12 to 16. ‘ Hornpipe ’ (Macleod Campbell).—The following, who will reappear to-morrow night, were recalled:—Lorna M‘Donald and Vera Patterson (Oamaru), Alma Holdaway and Noeline Marston. PIANO SOLO, 11 and under 12. 1 Gavotte and Mussette ’ (Markham Lee). —The recalls, to be heard tonight, were Barbara Dear and Winifred Stone. ELOCUTION. Judge: Mr J. W. Bailey. RECITATION, humorous, girls, 12 and under 16. Own selection.—The following recalls, t 6 reappear to-night, were announced: —Cavell ■ Trask (Wellington) and Leone Cornish. CHARACTER. RECITAL, under 12. Own selection. Points awarded for costumes and make-up.—-The following were the recalls: —June Tregilgus (Mosgiel) and Alma M'Allan. DANCING. Judge; Miss Betty Carnochan. BALLET DANCE, operatic other than toe, under 10.—-Three recalls were announced, these being Helen Fraser (Burnside), Maureen Keenan, and Valmai Hamilton (Invercargill). They will reappear to-morrow. EVENTS TO-MORROW. To-morrow’s day sessions will include the preliminary hearings in several, of the scholarship classes, the elocution scholarship for boys being taken in the Victoria Hall in the morning, and followed by the open - adults’ elocution scholarship. , The second lection of the men’s vocal scholarship will be heard in His Majesty’s in the afternoon, where also the first section. of the Gilbert and Sullivan contest will be heard. In addition various recitation, dancing, and vocal solo classes will be heard in the initial stages.
