ANOTHER COLLISION
CUMBERLAND-HIGH STREETS INTERSECTION TRAM VERSUS BABY GAR A collision between a four-wheeler tramcar and a baby motor car at the intersection of Cumberland and High streets caused considerable speculation and curiosity shortly after 1 p.m. today. The small car was able to drive away under its own power, its only legacy from the impact with the heavy tram being a buckled door and broken window.
It did not take long for a considerable crowd to ' gather round the stranded tram, speculation being caused by the manner in which the vehicle had been slewed round out into the middle of the roadway by such a diminutive opponent. The tram was travelling towards the railway station and the motor car in a northerly direction towards the intersection when the collision occurred. These four centre wheel trams are notorious for their bouncing proclivities, and apparently in the act of a bounce it was “ tipped ” by the baby car and completely from the rails. It swung round at right angles to the line and into Cumberland street, partially blocking the roadway. Its only damage was a twisted handrail support and an old crack in the heavy under-carriage ironwork opened up a little more;
Following communication with the depot, a breakdown tram was soon upon the scene, and after much manipulation, jacking and pulling the errant vehicle was again hoisted on to the rails, the only reminder of the collision left on the roadway being some scattered broken glass and deeply-scored bitumen. No one sustained any injury.
