GIFTS OF GOLD
An old lady, white-haired, neatly dressed, with the bearing of an officer’s widow, walked into Red Cross headquarters in London wearing every bit of jewellery she possessed—rings, oldfashioned neckchains, bangles, brooches, lockets—mostly of gold. These she took off, and handed, one by one, to the organisers of the Red Cross sale at Christie’s. There were 16 articles in all—but the old lady was persuaded to keep her wedding ring.— 1 Daily Express,’ London.
