WINTER CUP TRIALS WINNING RIVAL, CATALOGUE, AND DICTATE PERFORM WELL [Pek United Press Association.! CHRISTCHURCH, August 10. Winning Rival, Catalogue, and Dictate all did good Winter Cup trials when the final gallops were held oh the outside of the course proper at Riccarton this morning. After overnight rain the course was on the dead side. Muffler put up the best six furlongs, while the best five went to Dictate. Scarteen and Great Flight were the best over half a mile. . • The steeplechasers over the National course also attracted attention. _The Wrecker ran a mile in Imin 45 2-ssec, the first four furlongs in 51 4-ssee. ■ Ryetown ran half a mile in 52 l-ssec, Great Flight beating Pleading by nearly a length in 51 4-ssec. Haughty Winner was far too good for Master- Dingle, Balmenter, and Raroa over seven furlongs in Imm 36 3-ssec, the first three furlongs taking 40 4-ssec. Haughty Winner was hard held until nearing the finish, where he was allowed to run along freely. Alma, after running the first halt-mile in 51 4-ssec, finished her mile in Imm 46 3-ssec. . ■ , ' . ... Winning Rival did an attractive trial over seven furlongs, drawing away to beat Kilrobe and St. Cloud by several lengths in the final furlong. They reached three furlongs in 38 l-ssec, and Winning Rival completed the task in lmini32 2-ssec. ' Muffler, after giving Stylosa a start, finished a neck in front at the finish of six furlongs in Imm 19 3-ssec, the fin 1, four furlongs in 53 3-ssec. Camphor gave Gentility a start and a narrow beating over five furlougs m Imin 7 l-ssec, Ripley and Hugmedoing the same time, while The Vulture was too fast for Gnohxll in Imm 6sec. Hanlon beat Prudent Pnnoe and Settlement, the last-named stopping quickly over a mile in Imm 50sec, the first half being run m 64 l-6seo. Scarteen ran half a mile m 51 3-ssec, doing it well. ... , e Padishah and Lmabohm were clear ot Clarion Call until the concluding stages of a mile, where Clarion Call moved up, the trio finishing in line m Imm 55 2-sseo, the first four taking 5< Synthetic shaded Stabilize over six furlongs in Imin 21 2-ssec, the final half being run in 53 3-ssec. Catalogue did a good trial when he was hard held to he well clear of Raeburn, with Wagner further back, on the completion of seven furlongs m Imin 35sec, the first three taking 39 had half a length to spare from Night Hawk at the end of five furlongs, run in Imin 5 2-ssec. This was the best effort over this distance. _ Lockit and Wardress, after reaching three furlongs in 39 2-ssec, completed seven in Imin 33 4-ssec, while Nigger (Boy beat Spanish Lad by half a length over the same ground in Imin 34 3-ssec, the first three being run in 40 2-ssec. Anita Foe and Sleeveless did six furlongs in Imin 21sec, while Strip was a neck in front of Bologna in Imin 20 Fosette was a couple of lengths clear of Cherokee over have a mile in 52 l-ssec, while Rebel Chief went up the back in 52 3-ssec. Slayer (J. M'Crae) and Blue Steel (J. Chaplin) were companions in a round over the steeplechase fences, the display being marred when Blue Steel, usually a safe jumper, fell heavily at Cutts’s fence, landing on his neck. He was winded for a few minutes, hut appeared little the worse for his fall. Chat (S. Wright) and Lactose (P. Jarvis) were sent over the same ground. They did well until Cutts’s, which Lactose hit, though he stood up. Gay Boa (E. Jennings) and Joy Boa (J. Richards) went at a slow pace in a round of the national course. Joy Boa lost ground at most of the fences. Gay Boa .got over Cutts’s exceptionally well.

Colonel French (T. Boyle) made a better showing than Turaki (P. Boyle) over four hurdles in a similar trial.
