NEW ZEALANDERS’ CLUB

OPENED BY MRS CHURCHILL O.C. PLEASED WITH TROOPS LONDON, August 9. (Received August 10, at 1 p.m.) Mrs Churchill opened the New Zealand Forces Club in London. She recalled her visit to New Zealand, and paid a tribute to the troops she had seen training in southern England. Mrs Churchill wished the club good luck with the Maori words “ Kia Ora.” Mr Jordan welcomed Mrs Churchill, Lord Caldecote, Major-general Freyherg, Lady Ferguson, Sir lan Hamilton, and the diplomatic representatives of Norway and Brazil. Hundreds of New Zealand Navy, Army, Air Force members, and civilians were present. Mr Jordan handed over the club to Major-general Freyberg. The latter expressed satisfaction with the progress of the troops in training. He said they had three full-scale exercises last month and covered 100 miles in six days on foot and with full battle equipment. , The ceremony was broadcast to New Zealand. The club is splendidly equipped. A photograph of the Right Hon. P. Fraser is superimposed on a plaque of Mussolini embedded in concrete at the entrance. SEVEN DEATHS FACTORY EXTENSION COLLAPSES LONDON, August 9. (Received August 10, at 1.30 p.m.) Seven were killed and nine injured when the extension of a large factory in a north-western town collapsed. A military guard has been posted around the factory.
