POLICE COURT

TUESDAY, APRIIfsO, (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) SERIOUS CHARGE. A young man, whose name was suppressed in the meantime, was remanded until May 8 on a charge of committing a grossly indecent act. The accused, who was arrested this morning, was granted bail in his own recognisance of £SO, with a surety of the same amount, and he was ordered to report daily to the police, THEFT FROM HOTEL. Cecil Milton Holland pleaded guilty to the theft of a cushion, the property of Henry Dunne. Sergeant Johnsen said the cushion was taken from the Kensington Hotel on April 18, and when his home was visited by the police they found the cushion there. The theft occurred when Holland was under the influence of liquor. The accused said he did not remember his act, and when he was sober he was too frightened to return the cushion. The Magistrate described the theft as a foolish one, and told Holland that a man of his age should have known better. The accused was fined £2. DISORDERLY BEHAVIOUR. Patrick O’Donnell Gayigan, who created a disturbance in two shops in South Dunedin while under.the influence of liquor, was fined £2. Gavigan expressed regret for his offence, and said he did not remember being in the_ two shops. He asked for the suppression of his name, as otherwise he would probably lose his job. , The Magistrate, fining the defendant, said this was not the class of offence that merited the suppression of the name.
