MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board 1 was held to-day, those present being the chairman (Mr J. Wallace), Messrs N. Colquhoun, W. M. Cooper, H. A. Brough, D. Marshall, W. D. Sutherland, C. E. Richards, B. Morgan, and D. C. Cameron. CLUTHA VALLEY SCHOOL It was decided to hold over the erection of an assembly hall at Clutha Valley, as the board ' had more urgent works to attend to. A request was made by the committee that the shelter sheds be attended to, as they provided Title shetler for the children, the architect reporting that part of the sheds was glassed in in front so that adequate shelter would be provided.—The matter was referred to the architect for report. LEARNERS’ SWIMMING POOL. The headmaster of the Oamaru North School wrote referring to the success of the learners’ swimming pool recently built with the assistance of the board’s subsidy. The pool was made use of even by the younger children down to P 4 and P 3. COUNTRY TEACHERS’ DENCES. It was decided to approach the Education Department for a grant to build a teacher’s residence at Waipqri Falls and to ask for a definition of its policy in regard to residences for country teachers. OWAKA VALLEY PROPOSED CONSOLIDATION. In regard to the proposed consolidation at Owaka Valley, the Chairman reported that the board’s sub-com-mittee met members of the school committees and householders of the Owaka Valley, Tahatika, and Purekireki districts. The meeting decided that the matter of consolidation of schools be one for consideration at the meetings of householders on April 22. WINTER HOLIDAYS. • It was reported that the winter vacation extended from Saturday, May 4, to Monday, May 20. As Saturday, May 4, was the last day of the Centennial Exhibition, a suggestion had been made that schools be given 'the option of closing on the evening of Thursday, May 2, and reopening on Monday, May 20. This would enable teachers and others to travel to Lyttelton on Friday and reach Wellington on the last day of the Exhibition. —A motion was carried that committees be given authority to alter the dates as proposed if it were desired. - ’, RESIGNATIONS AND APPOINTMENTS. Resignations were accepted as follows: Head masters Clarence D. Gilling (High Street), John M'lntyre (Tokomairiro D.H.); infant mistress, Janet C. Wilson (Macandrew Road); assistants—Lawrence Hubbard (Caversham), Sarah E. Poster (Caversham), Muriel E. Laing (Caversham), Jessie R. Wither (Kelso), Robert L. Luke (Macandrew Road), Doris E. Miller (Macandrew Road), Florence Sumner (Macandrew Road), Henry R. Jewiss (Maori Hill), Errol A. Hamilton (St, Clair); cookery instructress, Joyce A. Ainge (South Otago Manual)'. The following ' appointments were confirmed;—Head master, John M‘lntyre (High Street); sole teachers— Harold M. Flynn (Glenomaru), Mabel E. Applegarth (Mrs, Luggate); assistants—Robert L, L. Luke (Green Island), Noreen W. Keown (Kelso), Annie Johansen (Mrs, Momona), Rhoda I. Newton (Ranfurly D.H.)', Norman M. Tyrrell (St. Clair), Margaret E. Hickman (Mrs, St. Clair), Muriel E. Laing (Sawyers Bay). Transfers were approved as follows: —Assistants—Doris E. Miller, Forbury (from Macandrew Road), and Florence Sumner, Caversham (from Macandrew Road).
ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £32,403 15s 5d were passed for payment.
