ST. KILDA AFFAIRS

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the St. Kiida Borough Council was held last night, the mayor (Mr J. J. Marlon) presiding. Those present included Crs W. Rutherford, H. H. Johnson, E. Longworth,. J. N. Hinton, J. C. Cherry, T. B. D.-Roy, R: S., Brent, W. J. Lovell, G. Glue, and N. D. Anderson. A TIDY BOROUGH. The time is coming when there will be a. reduction iu maintenance, costs, and this will be reflected in a relief of the ratepayers’ charges,V said Gr Hinton, as chairman of the Works Committee, in expressing satisfaction with the general appearance of the borough. Since his return from £outh Africa he had inspected the borough thoroughly, and he was confident that residents as a whole must bo proud or it. There remained only three streets —Bird, Dalgety, and Auld streets—to he tar-sealed, and bo hoped that either Bird or Dalgety street would be sealed in the near future. He congratulated fhe foreman and the scheme 13 men employed on the manner in which the streets had been placed in order. FINANCIAL. The Finance Committee; recommended the payment of accounts amounting to £320 4s Id,, and notified receipts amounting to £2/9 Cs. Ane bank balance stood at credit £3,/0o As Id.—Adopted. • A review of the year s finances was presented by the town clerk (Mr J. V. Tresize). 'This showed that the total, receipts for the year amounted to £41,008 18s Id, and the expenditure to £40,010 Is 7d, a credit of £998 16s 6d. The district fund account commenced with a credit balance of £3,913 I9s 5d and finished with a credit of £4,243 18s 4d namely: Bank* balance £3,313 ,19s 5d deposit with Dunedin Savings Bank £6OO, and due under employment promotion scheme £329,18s lid. Rates struck amounted to £23,758 11s 3d, of which £2£,022 8s -8d had been collected, leaving £1,736 2s 7d outstanding. Arrears outstanding ■ from previous years amounted to £2,777 9s sd. and of this amount £1,499 13s Id had been collected. After allowing for rates written off. the total amount outstanding at March 31 was £2.079,13/? 3d. an increase of £202 3s lOd over that of the previous year.

. The position was: described as very satisfactory. The sum of- £5. was donated to tha Musselburgh-School Committee toward* ■the cost of running the school library, - LIGHTING. It was decided as an experiment, to. . : wards improving the lighting in Prince Albert foad to install a- 250-candle-power light outside the Town Hall in l lieu of the existing 100-candle-power globe. STRAY DOGS. In the matter of the control of stray dogs in the -playgrounds at St, Clair,, the town clerk (Mr R. A. Johnston), advised that' the council ranger had been instructed to give the matter hia attention.—Received. ANZAC DAY. The Secretary of the Musselburgh School Committee invited the mayor' ' and councillors to. be present at tho Anzac - Day service to bo held- on tho school grounds.—The mayor and at many councillors who were not attending similar functions at Forbury and St. Clair Schools agreed to be present at Musselburgh. It was decided to donate; the usual sum of £6 5s to the Returned Soldiers* Association Poppy Day funds. - DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS.. Reports of work done in their various departments were presented by tho foreman (Mr J. C. C'yma), the plumber ~ (Mr A. N. Shepperd), and the inspector (Mr F. T. de Largey).
