[From Ova Correspondent] PERSONAL. Prior to leaving the staff of the Milton branch of the National Bank, Mr M. 1. Clayton, who has been transferred to Invercargill, was the recipient of a silver pencil from his colleagues. Mr H. M'Callum, in making the presentation, referred to the good feeling existing between the recipient and his fellow-employees during the past eight years, and wished him every success. ; Mr Cliff Hibbcrd, clerk at the Milburn Lime and Cement Works, was the recipient of a barometer from his workmates last week on the occasion of his marriage. Mr J. M'lntyre, who has been rector of Toko. District High School for the past five years, has received notice of his appointment to the headmastership of High Street School, Dunedin, and will take up his hew duties at the beginning of next term. Miss Elizabeth Thornton, who is shortly to be married, was the guest of honour at a social function arranged by members of the Toko. Presbyterian Church Sunday - school teachers and choir. Miss Molly Gray, on behalf of the teachers, presented her with a crystal vase, and the Rev. S. T. Nicholls handed her a hanging mirror from the choir. , Mr and Mrs R. M. Rutherford, Milton, are visiting the exhibition, i Mr and Mrs James Gray, Milton, are holiday-making in the Nelson district, » Mrs S. M'Dowell, of Sydney, who has been visiting relatives in Owaka during the past three months, will start on her return journey to-morrow. BOWLING. The Milton Club closed the season on Saturday with a progressive mixed pairs, J. Campbell won _ the men’s prize after playing off with H. Wilson, and Mrs Jones defeated Mrs Goekerill in the play-off for the lady’s prize. The Kaitangata Club also closed on Saturday, pairs being played. Mackie and Pennell tied in the skips, and M'Fadxen and Gribhen in the leads. , The postponed match between the Owaka and Milton Clubs resulted in a win for the former by 6 points. Scores (Owaka names first) : A. James 22, T. Clayton 12; R. Roger 10. J. Cuff 27; C. Alloo 28, P. Davanney 15. Totals: Owaka CO, Milton 54. ; * GOLF. There, was a good attendance on the Milton Jinks on Saturday, when a medal round was played. The best card handed in was I. F. Thomson’s, with a net.score of 67. D. J. Sumpter and W. Sligo had the next best cards with net scores of 72. HOCKEY, ■The Mittpn Club opened the season on Saturday, when two matches were played against Training College, Dunedin. The A match resulted in a win for the visitors by 6 goals to 1, .while the Milton B team defeated College by 4 goals to 3. Bruce Club also opened on Saturday, when practice was indulged in by a good muster of players. GENERAL. At a meeting of the committee of the recently-formed Toko. Ploughing Club it was decided to hold a ploughing match towards the end of May, and: a sub-committee Was appointed to arrange the programme, j Judges for horsetf and - ploughing were, alsb nodiinated. Entries for the Toko. Farmers’ Club .gymkhana, to be held on are well up to those of previous years. The programme is a varied one, comprising trotting, galloping, jumping, steer riding, and novelty competitions. The Plunket Society* will have charge of the catering arrangements. ■ ■ PRESBYTERY OF CLUTHA. The Presbytery met last Friday. The Rev. W. M’Neur was elected Moderator of the Presbytery for'the ensuing 10 months. The Rev. C. J. Toc'ker, of Invercargill, was nominated by the Presbytery as Moderator of the Synod of Otago and Southland for the ensuing year. Commissioners from the congregation of Waitahuna attended in connection with the resignation of the. Rev. A. J. Wardlaw. They expressed the sincere regret of the congregation that he was leaving them, and it was decided to accept the resignation with regret. The. Rev. F. W. AVinton was appointed interim Moderator. A request was received from the charge of South Clutha that the Presbytery consider the question of alteration of boundaries. The , matter was left to the Boundaries Commission to confer with the office-bearers.
The meeting was adjourned to meet the Clutha P.A. to discuss the noretrenchment campaign,of the Missions Committee. The following resolutions were carried:—(l) “ That church treasurers be urged to remit contributions at least quarterly, in order- to avoid the financial waste in interest on bank overdraft.” (2) “ That the Presbytery Missions Committee be asked to interview management- committees where necessary to ask them _ to undertake the responsibility of raising the mission funds of the congregation.” Resuming, the Presbytery agreed “ that the Presbytery advise the management committees of their responsibility and of the great care to be exercised in leasing church property.” _ On the recommendation of the Finance Committee a number of grants'were approved.-The Rev. W. Cowser and S. Nieholls were elected to the Synod’s Finance Committee. It was decided that the annual retreat be held at Lovell’S Flat manse during the first week in June, and the convener of the Youth Committee commended to members the young men’s Bible class camp, to be held at Milton from May 9 to May 14. An invitation to the Presbytery to attend its Centennial celebrations was received from the parish of Lovell’s Plat, and it was decided that the Modc-ator renresent the Presbytery. The Rev. A. R. Harper was appointed convener of the Missions Committee of the T>r<>sliytery in place of the Rev. R. F. Judson.
