ISOLATION NO PROTECTION
NEW ZEALAND AND WAR DEFENCE MINISTER'S' WARNING [P*r United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, March 15. A warning that New Zealand was ,in a position of' danger was given this evening by the Minister of Defence, Hon. F. Jones, at a recruiting rally. “ Some say our isolation gives us protection,” the Minister said, “ Are we safe? We know that in the last war mines were laid round this coast by a raider, and what happened in the last war can happen in this war. We are in a position of danger, especially to our shipping and our own people. “ Some also said: ‘ Why can’t New Zealand keep out of the war?’ Britain was the best customer for the Dominion’s products, and what would happen to those products if New Zealand took up a stand not to assist Britain? “ Great Britain has promised to'do all she possibly can, if we are attacked from the see that we are adequately protected,” Mr Jones added. “ The people' of this country have to realise that we are being helped and all that that means.”
