OTAGO CHESS CLUB

The annual meeting ; of the Otago Chess Club was -held on Wednesday •vening, and was presided over by Mr Jf, P. Lang, president. • > The annual report and, balance sheet was submitted by the_ secretary, Mr W. Herbert. It showed the club,to be in a sound financial position. Mention was Blade in the report that two nominees oi tne Otago Cness Club attended tfce congress at ,Wellington, ' Mr J. : B. Dunlop and Dr E. .Bennett. Mr Dunlop, who already held the title of New Zealand champion,-was successful in retaining it, and congratulations had been forwarded to’h'im on . his meritorious performance. Dr Bennett had made ta good showing bn'his first:; entry. Reference was-made during the meeting to the marriage of two prominent members of the club, Messrs R. Watt and W. Lang, and that appropriate presentations had been made by club members. The annual election of ''officers resulted in the return of the following members unopposed : —Patron, Mr ,0. Balk; president, Dr E. W. Rawnsley; senior vice-president, Mr J. C. M'Ansh; junior vice-president, Mr A. Clowes'; hon. secretary-treasurer, Mr W. Her-

bert; hon. auditor, Mr G. D. Wright; hon. solicitor, Mr W. Lang; committee —Messrs H. Hewitt, It. Simpson, P. D. Williamson, R. M'Dermid, and Dr E. Bennett. , Occasion was taken by the chairman to wish good-bye to Mr E. F. Evans, who has been transferred to the West Coast.- Several members took the opportunity of conveying to Mr Evans their hearty good wishes_ for success in his new district and their appreciation of the many qualities he possessed as a chess player and club member during his resdience in Dunedin. ■ Mr Evans suitably thanked those who had spoken in such eulogistic terms of himself and his small services to the club. It was decided to open the playing season on 'Wednesday, April 3, and to invite the mayor to preside at the opening.
