POLICE COURT

SATURDAY, MARCH 16. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Stated to have created a disgraceful scene in Frederick street yesterday afternoon, William Ernest Garden pleaded guilty to charges of' drunkenness and using obscene language m Frederick street.—On- the. first charge he was fined 12s 6d, in default 24 hours imprisonment, and on the second charge £2. Two first offenders on charges ot drunkenness were fined 10s each, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. INTOXICATED IN CHARGE. George Barton Harneiss, for whom Mr P. S. Anderson appeared, pleaded guilty to having been intoxicated while in charge of a motor car. Senior-sergeant Claasen said that the defendant had been observed by two constables to be driving along George street at about 40 miles per hour. This was at 1.15 a.m. to-day. When stopped by the constables, defendant, a farm labourer, aged 21 years, was found to be under the influence of drink. He was, however, given the opportunity of going home while the constable took charge of the car, but he became atgumentive. and was taken to the police mentative, and was taken to the police station. There were two other men in the car. and they also were the worse Mr Anderson said that defendant had declared that he had taken only three portergaffs, and this was between 5 and 6 o’clock that evening. Normally, he did not drink at all. It would appear that the defendant was influenced by his companions when he declined the considerate offer of the constables. The Magistrate said that it was rather straining the credulity of the bench to say that no drink had been taken since 6 o’clock. Defendant would be convicted and fined £ls, with medical expenses (£1 Is). His license was cancelled, and he was prohibited from drivig for a period of 12 months. In view of defendant’s financial circumstances. the magistrate agreed to a sum of £5 bring paid forthwith, and the balance of the fine at the rate of £1 per week.
