LATE SPORTING
INVERCARGILL TRACK WORK SEVERAL IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCES [Special to the ‘ Star.’] • INVERCARGILL, March 16, Features of the track work at Invercargill this morning were fast gallops by Spendthrift and Colonel Rouge, Sailing Lady, Waitoru, and Sea Lady. The weather was fine, but chilly, following a light frost, and the going was good. The course proper, next the rails, was open for the fast woiv. Spendthrift and Colonel Rouge set the main for the morning over six furlongs, when they registered Imin 16sec, the last four furlongs talking 51 3-ssec. This gallop was done outside the poles, 20ft out from the rails, and it was an outstanding effort on the part of both horses, who were together at the finish and running on in good style. Ashaway heat Sparkle by eight lengths over a mile and a-quarter in 2min 16sec, the last mile in Imin 49 3-ssec, and the last four furlongs in 54 3-ssec. Sparkle was pulling in the middle stages of the gallop, but she collapsed in the straight and stopped to a walk. She was making a choking noise and probably got the bit over her tongue, as there was nothing wrong with her when she pulled up.
Susie was going better than Bilbao at the finish of five furlongs in Imin 6 l-ssec, the last four furlongs done in 52 2-ssec. Pink Bond reeled off four furlongs in good style in 50 2-ssec. This mare is in good order, and is to make her debut in ""open company at Riverton, when she will be ridden by G. Barclay in the Aparima Handicap on the first day. Sea Lady was responsible for a brilliant seven furlongs in Imin 32 2-ssec. She ran the first three furlongs in 37 4-ssec, the five in Imin 4 4-osec, and came home over the last four in 54 3-sseo. The fact that she was taken outside the poles like Spendthrift and Colonel Rouge enhanced the merit of the gallop, and she finished her task in fine style. Wild Career beat Mona’s Song by a length over a mile in Imin 46 2-ssec, the last six furlongs in Imin 18 2-ssec, and the last four in 51 3-ssec. Wild Career was doing it within himself over the concluding stages, and Mona’s Song probably could have done a little betBlissful Lady and Aspire took Imin 34 l-ssee to run seven furlongs, the last four in 53 l-ssec, but both .could have improved a lot on this time. Aspire has made rapid progress lately and shapes as if she wifi get on the winning list again at Riverton. Sailing Lady finished better than Waitoru over a mile in Imin 44see, the last six in Imin 17sec, and the last four in 51 3-sseo. Sailing Lady did her work in pleasing style, but Waitoru pulled very hard in the early part and was stopping over the last bit. ‘Silkwood was not bustled at any sta»e when running a mile in Imin 50 °4-ssec, the last four furlongs in 53 l-ssee. Gold. Robe was too good for (Royal Lancer ‘over six furlongs, -which was left behind in the smart time of Imm 18sec, the last four in 51 l-ssec. Gold Robe infused plenty of dash into his effort. ' Boswell has been troubled with soreness, and will not race at Riverton. Gay Deception was schooled over eight of the steeplechase fences, and gave a patchy display. AT RIVERTON. The weather was fine at Riverton after, a light frost, and the going was first class except where stated. The fast work was done on the No. 1 grass track. Peony Rose, who has come through solid preparation and is looking well, was given a circuit of pace work the reverse way, and then left the mile and a-quarter post under nice hold, to finish up over the last four furlongs in 55see. Campus and Chanty Man ran five furlongs in Imin 4sec, the last four in 55sec. They finished together, and were kicked up over the last half-fur-long. Straightdel, after doing a circuit on the plough at half-pace, ran half a mile in SOsee, and did it well within himself.
Feather Boa was much too good for Ballyagan over five furlongs in Imia 4sec, the last four in 55see. Gnohill and Slumber were together at the end of half a mile in 51sec, with the former doing it slightly better. Both Rodeur and Lazybones could have done better when running the last five of six furlongs in linin 4|sec. Boaform and Irish Fling ran six furlongs on the course proper in Imin 194 sec, the last four in 54sec. Boaform was doing it much better. Top Row and Islay Downs were not extended when running five furlongs in linin SJsec, the last four in 53sec. Poniard did strong three-quarter pace work over a circut, and came home over work over a circuit, and came home over the last four furlongs in 56sec. Southern Sail left seven furlongs behind in Imin 32sec, the last six in linin 18sec and the last four in 52see. She vyns under a good hold until kicked up over the last half-furlong. Moneyraore and Rebel Mate ran the last four of five furlongs in 50sec, finishing under a good hold. Rebel Mate looks well.
Viking left four furlongs behind on the course iproper in 51sec, but was stopping over the last bit. Spanish Lad ran seven furlongs, taking Msec for the first furlong, and was picked up by Nigger Boy at the six furlongs, which they left behind in Imin 15sec, the last five in Imjn 3sec, and the last four in 51sec. Spanish Lad was a length in front at the finish, and it was a good gallop the way he did it. Santoft, who is looking well, was given half-pace work on the plough. Queen of Song and Don Roy were paired over six furlongs on the course proper in Imin 19sec, the last four in 54sec. It was easy for Queen of Song. Arctic Star. Gold Wren, and Vitaphone jumped the brush double and single brush in company. Arctic Star and Vitaphone gave quite a good display, but Gold Wren did not put any dash into his work, and had to be kicked up to it all the way. El Caballo gave a good exhibition when jumping two rounds of schooling fences.
M'Heath was inadvertently omitted from the list of acceptances for the Great Western Steeplechase. He figures as an acceptor for the Waiau Steeplechase. but he is ineligible for it. The race is for horses that have not won a steeplechase to the value of £l2O. and the Gardner Memorial Steeplechase, won bv MTTentli at the TUrchweod Hunt Meeting, was worth £155 to him.
