A HOLLOW VICTORY

UNIVERSITY BY AN INNINGS WHOLE ELEVEN BOWL Following the very fine record partnership of 220 for the ninth wicket put up by two young- players, Rennie and Clark, yesterday morning, the afternoon play in the intervarsity match between Otago University and Canterbury College was in the nature of an anticlimax, for after the first five College wickets in the second innings had fallen cheaply, the Otago captain gave every member of his team (including himself) a turn with the ball. Consequently interest in the game slumped and became more or less a “ bit of fun.” Even in these circumstances, however, the visiting eleven could not muster more than 163 runs, and so were beaten by an innings and 211. AFTERNOON PLAY. Continuing after the luncheon interval yesterday, Mitchell and Moran took the scoro along to 59, at which stage Begg got a quick one past Moran, and the board showed 59—4—15. The scoring was not particularly fast, but the batsmen were displaying sounder defence than they did in the first innings. Williams, a former Carisbrook player, was next in, and Mitchell offdrove Macdonald very sweetly, but the. same bowler just lifted Williams’s .off bail with a fast one. 745 —2. Mitchell, who waa joined by Loveridge, began a leg-hitting crusade when the rival captain, Dunn, went on to howl, cracking 16 off the over. At this stage the University fielding improved! a little, some -good stops being made. Something of a test match atmosphere was here introduced, drinks being brought on to the field and play stopped while the refreshment was partaken of. Thus fortified, Mitchell drove cleanly and brought up 100. The duel between Mitchell and Dunn continued, hut, shortly afterwards, the former found this “ skipper’s ” interlude a “ bit over the edge,” so to speak, for he returned a ball, which Dunn lield._ Mitchell had made an even 50 very nicely, and the total was 115 for six. _ More slovenly fielding, and then Mottram brought the match so much neater a conclusion by bowling Fraser for 7. The next batsman was Callaway, a nephew, by the way, of the famous Australian-Otago-Canterhury player. Here Baker was put on to bowl, and the game dawdled along in the bright sunshine until the tea adjournment, when the score was 139 for seven wickets. . , • After tea whatever seriousness had remained in the game went by the hoard. Baker donned the pads, and Lawson, Rennie, Cornish, and the rest were “given a. go” with the hall. (Rennie, by . the way, had quite a good match for his first appearance in a University fixture, for in addition to scoring a century, he took a wicket with the first hall he sent down—quite a good ball, too. The college side was disposed of by 4.40 p.m.. and Otago registered a substantial win. Scores: —•
