SERIOUS COAL STRIKE
NO SETTLEMENT IN AUSTRALIA THREAT TO NON-UNION LABOUR Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, March 12. The coal strike is daily becoming worse, and there is no immediate prospect of a settlement. Several mines in the Rothbury district, near Maitland, which are being worked by non-union labour, have not yet become idle. They are producing 10.000 tons a week, but may yet be coerced into the strike by reason of threats emanating from the strikers against the miners employed in those pits. A report from Brisbane states that the Mount Isa mines will become idle at the week-end, when the coal supplies give out, throwing 1,400 men out of employment and indirectly affecting 5.000 others.
The executive of the Australian Council of Trades Unions pledged cooperation and financial assistance by means of a weekly levy from all unionists.
