WHIPPET NOTES
[By Speed. l
The Dunedin Whippet Racing Club will be holding a trophy meeting on Saturday. Good nominations are to hand, and excellent racing should be witnessed. Good trophies are available ior the various races, and competition should bo keen. There will be lo races to bo run off. Most dogs have had a slight let-up in training, but are now being hurried along in their work. W. Winchester’s Overcast is in great fettle. This dog won the big races at the last two meetings, and more wins will come his way in the near future. Gin Sling has been mated to Tamerlane. This should produce good pups,' both dogs being well bred and off good winning stock. Members of the club have had a working bee at the club’s grounds the last two Saturdays, and great improvements have been effected to the racing track and surroundings. The locally-bred Laddies Best won a double at the last meeting of the Southland Club. This good dog will be seen in action shortly at a Dunedin Club meeting later on in the season. , T The Milton dog, Milton Lassie; showed pace in her race at the club s last meeting. She was track shy, but, nevertheless, showed great speed in patches. ■ , , C. Unwin produced a hot number ” in Hot Chance. This dog won the second class handicap easily. He is a full brother to Hot Luck. The former will be hard to head off in the Open Handicap on Saturday. Alf. Heenan’s Ginger Jack won two races last meeting, the Novice Race and’ the Open Hurdles Handicap, the latter success being scored very easily. This dog jumns well, and the Open Hurdles should come his way. Replica won the Improvers Race for Mrs M'Kinlay, doing his work at tho rmht end of the race. Shadeland, the second dog. went badly, stopping when ho should have put some dash into his work. The Free-for-All was not a true run race, tho dogs breaking the line to a vorv uneven start. Buck s Head, owned bv 'W Winchester, was the-winner. Ihe oiub has a free-for-all on its programme for Saturday, and eight good dogs will face the starter. Slippers of dogs can make this an interesting race by letting their charges go when the gun goes oit, and not looking for break-aways. J. M’Mullan’s Night Queen will be racing on Saturday, and the writer expects her number to go up on the board. Night Queen is in steady work, and is looking in great fettle. A strong ladies’ commitee has been elected, Mrs J. Donaldson being president. and Mrs J. Glass re-elected secretary. The social side of the club s activities is in good) hands, all tho committee being good workers Sailing Lady, owned by E. Reynolds, does not put much heart into her races. This little dog is always produced in nice condition, but will not reproduce her track work on race days. The Milton dog, Cock Robin, went a great race in his heat of the Payton Memorial. It was only in the last few strides that he petered) out. On that run ho should win the second class race on Saturday. Peter M'Kinlay’s Phantom Gold never runs a bad race. A very consistent performer, she should be in a place again on Saturday. She is very well just now, the short let up doing her a lot of good. O. Menhinniek has his team, in good order. His Inirdlo dog, King,; Midas, jumped very badly at the last meeting, and rose high at each jump,' and lost ground, finishing well back in his race. 6. Campbell’s White Gold went a good race in the hurdles, and for a miniature dog his performance in running second to Ginger Jack was outstanding. Maiden Handicap: Milton Lassie and Gay Miss._ Second Class Handicap: Cock Robin, Irish Paddy, and Will Fyffe Improvers’ Handicap: Shadeland or Mountain Glory.
