TRAGIC HOLIDAY
GIRL DROWNED IN RIVER DESPERATE EFFORTS TO SAVE HER [Pkh United Press Association.] NELSON, February 23. The holiday of two Wellington girls in Nelson had a tragic ending yesterday when one was drowned in thw Maitai River. The victim of the accident was Miss Eugenie Clare Doohan, 24 years of. age, of Hill lington. An attempt at‘rescue by, two women failed, and efforts of artificial respiration by a member of the St. John Ambulance who arrived on the scene shortly after and brought the woman out of, the water were also unsuccessful. Miss Doohan, with her sister, came to Nelson last Sunday week for a holiday. Yesterday afternoon she went offon her own for a swim. Two women, Mrs Hall and her daughter, heard a scream, and saw her struggling in the water. They jumped in, making every effort to give assistance. Miss Hall swam out and seized Miss Doohan’a arm, but lost her grip in the struggle. They then held a stick out to the helpless woman, but she was unable to catch Hold of it. Miss Doohan, whose mother is a widow, intended returning home tomorrow.
