CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS

FULL PROGRAMME ARRANGED LOCAL FESTIVITIES FOR WEEK Centennial celebrations commence next week, when a full range of festivities of all descriptions has been provided and spread out over the seven days. Citizens will find no difficulty in entering into the festivities which will mark the first one hundred years of Dominion colonisation. Among the important functions to take place is the laying of the foundation stone by the mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) of the Centennial memorial at Signal Hill, Sports gatherings and other events are well to the fore, while perhaps the chief day of the week for the children will be Tuesday, when they will be entertained and feasted at Wingatui. The programme scheduled for the week is as follows: Saturday, February 17: Sports meeting, Caledonian Ground, noon. Kaikorai Swimming Club’s carnival, Kaikorai Baths, 2 p.m. Dramatic plays and pageant, Concert Chamber, 8 p.m. Sunday, February 18: Thanksgiving services in individual churches. Monday, February 19: Centennial exhibition of New Zealand art at Pioneer Hall. Early Settlers’ Reunion, Logan Park, 2.30 p.m. Tuesday, February 20; Schools’ Day at Wingatui. Centennial art exhibition continued. Beach carnival at St. Clair, 7.30 p.m, Wedneday, February 21: Foundation stone ceremony at Signal Hill, 3.30 p.m. Women’s athletic meeting, .Caledonian Ground, 6 p.m. Art exhibition and St. Clair carnival continued. Thursday, February 22: D.J .C. races (Cup Day) at Wingatui, commencing at 12.30. Otago Centre swimming carnival, Municipal Baths, 7.45 p.m. Art exhibition and St. Clair carnival continued. Saturday, February 24: D.J.C. races at Wingatui. Otago women’s and junior championships, Caledonian Ground, 1.30 p.m. Foundation stone ceremony at Maori Memorial Church at Otalkou, 2.30 p.m. Scottish .concert, Town Hall, 8 p.m. Art exhibition and. St. Clair carnival continued. Tuesday, February 27: Otakou historical pageant, His Majesty’s Theatre, 8 p.m.
