Quietened Down. Though horses on. each side of her were twisting and turning about at the start of the Plying Handicap at Winton, Ortyx stood up to the barrier very quietly and was the smartest to jump out. P. Veight has been very patient with this filly, and appears to have thoroughly cured her of her waywardness.. This was Ortyx’s first appearance in open company. Unlucky. Phalanx gave a lot of trouble at the start of'the Flying Handicap, and lost about three lengths when the harrier rose. He then received a bad check through .going’for-an opening that did not exist, and had to go outside three horses on the turn. But for these incidents Phalanx would have won. Bad Gear. Slamanhan wouldl . probably have beaten Green Locket in the Novice Stakes at Winton had the saddle not slipped round. J. W. Jennings had to finish on him without the aid of stirrup . irons, and under the circum-' stances did well to get his mount into second place. Waitoru had a similar experience; in the concluding race of the day. Another Big Dividend. As at the Gore meeting the previous week the Winton fixture opened with an outsize dividend, the winner of yesterday’s race having only £l2 invested on his winning chance. Withdrawn. Both Sparkle and Wild Career were withdrawn from the principal race at W*nton to-day immediately after their race yesterday. Both are engaged in the Dunedin Cup next Thursday. Kicked in Birdcage. While the horses engaged in the Barkley Handicap were parading in. tile birdcage,, Counterlunch kicked Pink Bond, and the latter was decidedly lame afterwards. : , Poniard. ; Poniard, winner of the steeplechase at_ Winton, won both jumping races at this fixture last year. He was well handled in yesterday’s race by Rex Beale, who recorded his first win since •returning to the saddle some months ago. Inquiry. After the Plying Handicap at Winton, H. Phillips, rider of Phalanx, lodged a complaint against P. Spratt, rider of Ortyx, for interference in the straight. After taking evidence the Judicial Committee decided to take no action. To Return to Racing. Some time ago it was decided to retire Southern Smile to the paddock, but visits to Logan Derby in 1938 and more recent to U Scott failed to bring results, and it has been decided to place this mare back in training. It is almost 18 -months Since Southern Smile was seen in action, and during her absence she has lost all racing condition. ‘ Aga Khan's Horse for Australia. Le Grand Due, bred and owned by the Aga Khan, who was third to Midday Sun in the Derby, and who won the New Stakes at . Ascot, has been purchased by the well-known Australian breeder, Mr P. H. Miller. By Blenheim out of La Douariare, by Spearmint—that is his breeding. His threequarter brother, Bulandshar has made impression in New Zealand with his stock. High Caste is one of his offspring. Algerian Impressive. One of the most impressive wins at tho-Egmont Meeting last week was that of Algerian in the Nolan Cup (says the Auckland ‘ Star ’). From the time he raced to the front at the five furlongs it was just a question of what was going to be second.- He carried the field along at such a, strong pace that most of his opponents had bad enough by the time the straight entrance was reached. Times may not be the best tests, but the fact that Algerian made his own pace for about two-thirds of the journey and then ran the nine furlongs over 4sec faster than the time required by the open-class horses in the Tonks’ Stakes would appear the probidble reason for the manner in which nearly all his opponents stopped over the concluding stages. Recent racing has improved Algerian tremendously, and a good middle-distance handicap may come his way during the autumn. He is a three-year-old halfbrother by Beau Pere to the New Zealand Derby winner Lowenberg. Sydney Easter Yearling Sales. For the annual Easter sales to be held at Sydney by Messrs William Inglia and Son on March 26, 28, and 29, 609 yearlings have been entered. . Several ex-New Zealand sires are represented, Beau Pere by 13, Bulandshar 1, Gaino Carrington 1, Iliad 3, Siegfried 2, and Waikare 7. Hall Mark, winner of £28,619 in stakes, and a son of that great racehorse and sire, Heroic, will he represented by 15 yearlings. Hall Mark, whose oldest progeny are now two-year-olds, has made a very successful start at the stud, and has already produced four good ones in Rylstone, Status, Mark Twain, and Goldsmith. He is expected to carry on his sire’s success, and there is sure to be keen competition for his yearlings next month. Of the 74 sires represented in the catalogue, no fewer than 43 of them are imported, and are from the best strains in England. Among the colonial-bred sires represented are Contact, of, the Sydney Cup, Denis Boy and Gaine Carrington, both Caulfield Cup winners; Hall Mark, A.J.C. Derby; Limarch, A.J.C. and V.R.C. Derbies and’ St. Legers; Manfred, A.J.C. and V.R.C. Derbies; Peter Pan, winner of two Melbourne Cups; Rampion, A.J.C. and V.R.C. Derbies; Rivoli, A.J.C. Derby; Spearfelt, V.R.C. Derby and St. Leger. Melbourne and Australian Cups; Sylvandale, V.R.C. and A.J.C. St. Legers, Australian and King’s Cups; Theo, A.J.C. and V.R.C. Derbies; Veilmond, V.R.C. Derby and A.J.C. and V.R.C. St. Legers; Wai-
kare, Queensland Derby; and Winooka, who established an Australasian record when he carried ,9,13 and won the A.J.C. Doncaster Handicap in Imin 35|sec. This year’s sale presents exceptional opportunities to secure high class yearlings.
