Time, Imin 44sec, NOTES ON THE MEETING [By St. Claixi.] The climatic conditions for the opening day of the meeting were perfect, and the district having missed most or the heavy rain that fell along the Southland coastline, the course was in really good order, though a little slow. > The attendance was good, and apparently not affected,by the petrol restrictions, as the gate receipts were about £lO better than on the corresponding day last year. The racing was interesting, and, though the fields on the two principal open races were small, they produced excellent finishes. 'The steeplechase was robbed of some interest by Osculate’s rider being unseated at the first fence. Poniard went well, and gave an excellent exhibition of clean and fast jumping. Both Red Feather and Royal Money missed the jump-out at the start of the Novice Stakes, and Cone Peak led out from Green Locket. This pair were followed along the back and round the far turn by Colonel Rouge and Slamannan. Approaching the home turn Cone Peak dropped out, and Green Locket was a length clear of Slamannan and Colonel Rouge, In the run home Green Locket just lasted long enough to beat by half a length Slamannan, whose saddle had shifted, and Jennings finished without the stirrup irons. Colonel Rouge was a length away third, 11 followed by Ackemma, Royal Money, and Red Feather. Time, Imin 18 3-ssec.

Rey Chimes, Erin’s View, Sea Born, and Koesian failed to go away at the start of the Otapiri Harness Handicap, and Erin’s Country broke at the end of

a furlong. Brown Cloud began the best of the limit horses and led over the first half-mile from Bondsman, June Tide, and Tureo. As these four raced into the back Erin’s View ran to the head of the others. At the end of a mile Bondsman ran up on the outside of Brown Cloud, and they were two lengths clear of Tureo, who was being driven. Then Bondsman took the lead, and was followed into the straight by Turco, Juno Tide, and Brown Cloud. Bondsman drew away in the run homo to win easily by eight lengths from Juno Tide, who beat Tureo by three lengths. Brown Cloud and Happy Erin were next.

Sparkle, next the rails, and Peony Rose took charge immediately after the start for the Winton Cup, and they ran together all the away about two lengths in front of Wild Career. Racing down the straight, Peony Rose was being hard ridden, but Sparkle just beat her by half a head. Wild Career was four lengths away third, and Mona’s Song, who could not handle the going, 10 lengths further back. The small field for the Flying Handicap gave a lot of trouble at the barrier, and when the tapes were released Phalanx and New Note missed the jump-out. Ortyx led out from Aspire and Rodeur, and at the far turn Rodeur ran into second place, these three running in close order two lengths clear from Phalanx. The latter closed up racing across the top, but was disappointed in going for an opening and had to go outside the three leaders turning into the straight. At the distance Phalanx challenged Ortyx, hut the latter hung on to beat him by a long neck. New Note was two lengths awav third, with 'a similar distance to Aspire. • * * » Guste led Osculate to the first fence in the Winton Steeplechase and made a bad jump and appeared to cause Osculate to drop his rider. For nearly a mile and a-half Guste, who put in several bad jumps, and Vitaphone led Poniard, but at the stand double the last j round Poniard joined Guste and King Willow moved up into third place. Guste led Poniard to three fences from home, where the latter jumped to the front and King Willow closed up. At the next fence the last named fell, and Popiard drew away to beat Guste easily by eight lengths. Gay Boa was 80 yards away third, and Vitaphone was a poor fourth. »•* • . Black Bard appeared to be on tho move when the barrier was released for the start of the Barldy Handicap, and he led Counterlunch, King’s Chorus, and Moonraider along the back. At the far turn King’s Chorus moved Up on the outside of Black Bard and Counterlunch, and these three led across tho top from Pink Bond, Moonraider, and Cherokee. Couiiterlunch retired before leaching tho home turn, and Black Bard and King’s Chorus led into the straight from Pink Bond and Cherokee. At the distance King’s Chorus was in charge, then Cherokee put in her claim and beat him home a Jong neck. Night Pal finished fast from a long way back to take third money, a length in front of Pink Bond. Black Bard and Moonraider were next.

Ra, Nancy Gu3 r , Worthy Cross, Loyal Emblem, and Stanza all lost their chances at the start of the Hokouui Harness Handicap, and Royal Bond led Sappy King, Ovorproof, Dunalister, and Yon Yan over the first mile. With half a mile to go Overproof was just showing a head in front of Royal Bond, Dunalister, Happy King, and Yon Yan. Dunalister joined Overproof on the turn for home, where they were closely followed by Happy King and Yon Yan. Dunalister drew out in the run home to win by a length and a-half from Happy King, who beat Yon Yan three lengths, Overproof, Worthy Cross, and Loyal Emblem were next.

From a good start for the Trades* men’s Handicap Ashaway led out of the straight from Valantua and AVaitoru, but after two furlongs Waitoru and Valantua were together just in front of Boaform and Chirp. Passing the five furlong post Boaform ran to the front and led across the top from Valantua and Waitoru, who were racing together just in front of Chirp. Boaform was two lengths clear turning for homo from Valantua, Waitoru, and Chirp, and held her advantage to the post, Valantua hanging on well to beat Chirp a length for second money. Waitoru, whoso saddle slipped early in the race, was a head away fourth. Ashaway was next.
