AMENITIES SOCIETY

COMMITTEE MEETING A meeting of the committee of the Dunedin Amenities Society was held yesterday afternoon, Mr Crosby Morris presiding. There were also present Mourg J. Wilson, J. L. Salmond, James Begg, R. Fountain, D. Tannock, W. J. Birrell, J. Ash, J. M'George, A. C. Cameron, andl Mrs H. L. Cook. The Secretary of the Portobello branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association advised, that the branch had decided to take over the roadside beautification of the Lower Portobello road'. 'Arrangements were in hand for the continuation of the employment of the necessary men, and members of the association had agreed to act as honorary rangers for the adequte protection of the trees and shrubs already planted.—Gratification was expressed at the interest shown hy the Portobello Returned Soldiery’ Association, and an assurance was given that the society would continue to co-operate. Mr Cameron reported that he had received a visit from the chairman of the Dunedin North and Leith Amenities Society (Mr John Gray), seeking the co-operation of this society in improving certain corners of the road and the hanks of the stream in the Lower Leith Valley above Woodhaugh. Mr Gray thought that possibly a subsid(y could be obtained. —It was decided that Messrs Fountain and Birrell should confer with the Dunedin North Society on the matter. Replies were received from the City Council to several requests from the society for improvements to reserves and playgrounds in the city. The council accepted the society’s offer of 300 red beeches for planting in the Southern Cemetery.—A communication from the council regarding trees for Market Reserve resulted in a good! deal of discussion, after which it was agreed! to recommend that a clump of large silver birches be planted. Messrs Fountain and Cameron were appointed a sub-committee to go into the question of appointing honorary rangers, and to report to the nest meeting of the society. The Town Clerk wrote stating that the Reserves Committee of the council had approved of the society’s suggestion that the existing iron fence be removed from the convenience and converter station at Manor Place, and the area planted out with suitable garden plots.—Noted. It was decide to congratulate Mr W. A. Thomson, of Halfway Bush, on winning the Loder Cup for 1940 for outstanding work in connection with New Zealand native flora. —Mr Tannock stated that Dunedin horticulturists bad held the cup on four occasions, a !
