OTAGO WINS

WELLINGTON (HIT FOR 211 WHYTE BATS BRIGHTLY Half-an-hour's play this morning was sufficient to finish the Plunket Shield match, which resulted in a win for Otago by 58 runs, the remaining two Wellington wickets adding 36 runs, most of which were got by Whyte, who made a brisk 42 in the 49 minutes he was at the wickets. Tindill, still batting under painful conditions, pluckily held up his end ahd remained not out with 14 to his credit. Although the gates were thrown open to the public, there were not more than a score or so of spectators when play was resumed at 11 o’clock. The position was interesting, though much in Otago’s favour, Wellington requiring 95 runs with two wickets in hand. Elmes opened to Tindill. whose condition, unfortunately was not improved. He played a maiden. Moloney took the ball at the other end, a single to Whyte being the result. Whyte brought 180 up by driving Moloney _ straight for a couple and off-driving him for a single. The same batsman reached 20 by placing Elmes very nicely to fine leg. Whyte was aggressive, and going well down the pitch to Moloney hit him to the on for 4. At 188, Leader relieved Elmes, and Whyte . continued his aggressive tactics, punishing the new bowler to the tune of seven runs from the first three balls. Tindill cleverly steered one through the slips to the fence, 15 coming from the over. This brought up 200 in 303 minutes. Sixty-six runs were still needed, and this was reduced by two when Tindill pushed Moloney past mid-off. Robertson came on at Leader’s end, Whyte hitting the first past point for a couple and reaching 40. A single came for a similar stroke off the next ball. One went off Tindill’s bat to fine leg, and 210 appeared on the board. Another bowling change _ saw_ Lemin on at Moloney’s end, and his third ball got past Whyte and’bowled him. The outgoing .batsman had played a good knock for 42, with four 4’s. 211—9— 42. Ashenden was the last man, but he lasted only two halls, Toomey talking a good overhead catch at third slip. The innings closed for 211, leaving Otago the winners by 58 runs. ■ 1 Details: —> OTAGO. First innings ... 138 Second innings ■ 351 WELLINGTON. First innings ... '. 220 Second Innings.
